DESIGN NAME: Hymn For You
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vase
INSPIRATION: My inspiration comes from the Finnish nature, especially from the element of water. I am inspired by water in all its forms - liquid, steam, and ice. The theme of this work is spring - the time, when ice has partly melted and is forming crystal-like formations and bubbly forms in the water, reflecting light and shapes in intriguing ways. When a particular kind of light hits the piece, the ice pipes look like they are melting, while they otherwise seem frozen.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This vase is mouth blown in a hot shop using glass blowing techniques, which means every piece is individual. The vase is three-dimensional, each side looking different but equally fascinating and the form reflecting light in an exquisite manner. The most interesting feature of the vase is the side with hollow glass rods looking like solid ice, though seeming as if they were melting depending on the type of light. The element forms an ice wall around the vase.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This glass work is the most beautiful as a stand-alone object, next to a window where rays of light hit the vase in an exquisite manner. Overall, the vase fits all around the house allowing the design to complement the interior. Due to its three-dimensional shape, the glass looks different from each side, diversifying the visual experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2021 in Helsinki, Finland. It was exhibited in the private exhibition in The Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimäki in 2021, as well as in the Ornamo Art and Design Sale in 2022, Finland. This is the first free blown work of the kind, and in future, I am planning to take it to serial production.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My objective is to design and make high quality handmade glass that looks interesting from all angles, creating a surprising user experience. The goal of my research has been to increase the mobility and vibrancy of the product by improving the liveliness of the shape, the functionality, and the reflection of the glass. By mastering the blowing techniques and processes I have managed to create the Hymn For You Vase and to continue it by this new work to serial production.
CHALLENGE: Designing products that looks interesting from 360 degrees while mastering the required high level glass blowing skills is truly challenging. The most difficult part in terms of technique, was to keep the vase sides suitable melted, so that the sides are retaining their shape. I also wanted to maintain the fragility and sensitivity of glass and ice. Finally, I found the right way to produce them
