DESIGN NAME: Meta Recorder
PRIMARY FUNCTION: VR Musical Instrument
INSPIRATION: The user experience of the instrument was directly inspired by Sound-color synesthesia. Fascinated by the phenomenon, I wanted to allow everyone to experience it.
Using my interest in fine art, I conceived the idea of painting with the colors generated through sound.
As for the form design, I had works of Brancusi in mind - thinking the beautiful curvatures of his sculptures were suitable for coming up with a design that is both organic and ergonomic.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by sound-color synesthesia, a unique phenomenon only shared by the most extraordinary people, Meta:Recorder allows everyone to express themselves like never before. User can easily explore their artistic visions – all simply by playing it.
Distilling that idea to a form factor of a recorder - an instrument that is universally taught to all people throughout the world, Meta:Recorder is an instrument of true inclusivity - allowing even hearing-impaired to enjoy music for what they are.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Every time user plays a note, LEDs in both the instrument and the VR headset emit light in the corresponding color. Also, the instrument talks directly to the headset. So together with motion tracking, inside of VR world, the user can paint with their sound and movement with each motion and tone creating different expressions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in the December of 2021 in California, ArtCenter College of Design, taking 14 weeks to finish.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Digital and Electronic Device Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Dissected VR controllers out in the market to analyze their components and believed that infrared sensors that allow motion tracking can be elevated as a design element.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 180mm, 110mm, 300mm (vr headset)
410 mm, 110mm (instrument)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To better understand sound-color synesthesia, I interviewed friends with that phenomenon. Also, I performed an additional secondary research on the internet. I found out that people share similar visions when hearing a sound - in that a higher pitch tone would result in a brighter, warmer color hue, and a lower tone would cause the opposite effect.
CHALLENGE: Main challenge was on distilling the concept of synesthesia to a unique user experience that everyone can be curious and be excited about.
