| DESIGN NAME: Renomate PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application INSPIRATION: By the start of COVID-19 and subsequent lockdown, we saw a home renovation trend in Australia as people had more time to spend at home. However, a lack of sufficient skill in doing DIY projects usually stopped people to finish a renovation project properly. So we designed a platform that helps them to learn home makeover tips and guidance and recommends tools and materials that are required for a DIY project. We aim at boosting self-esteem in people by training them to DIY their home renovation. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Renomate is a mobile app that helps people learn manual skills to renovate their homes with the content that is shared by tradies and professional DIYers. It has several home DIY categories such as kitchen makeover, cleaning hacks, painting and etc. With its customizable filter and advanced searching option, this app enables users to find their favorite DIY tutorials based on the budget, level of difficulty, and area of the home. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Even people without a lot of renovator skills can easily learn tutorials because each tutorial is divided into several simple steps. Besides, the tools and materials for each project are listed in the app and the user can click on them to find out where to buy them from their nearest location. Users can also ask the in-app community for tips and guidance for a specific project. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in October 2020 in Sydney and is continued till now. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Figma, React, React Native SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Mobile app for iOS and Android devices TAGS: DIY app, home renovation, diy tutorials, kitchen makeover, renomate, diy projects, backsplash makeover RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We conducted user research at first to find out their pain points, the age range that does the most DIY projects, and the average cost of DIY projects in Australia. CHALLENGE: How to convince content creators to share their projects in the app. So we suggested a revenue model for DIY content creators that enables them to receive a commission for each tool that users buy from their tutorial Tool section. The innovation is that the app recommends tools based on the warehouse locations near to the user, hence an Australian content maker may make money even from users all over the world who purchase staff from their local warehouse that has an affiliate program.
