DESIGN NAME: Movus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Autonomous Airport Vehicle
INSPIRATION: Movus is inspired from a major problem and mess occurring in the luggage and cargo transportation system in the current airports. In the current situation, carrying of the luggages from Baggage Handling Area to the airplanes is handled by the workers and in many cases the luggages are damaged or lost due to human factors or lack of follow-up systems. While every other procedure inside the airport and apron area is well-organised and carefully planned, the transportation of cargo and luggages seems to be highly complex and vulnerable to errors and mistakes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Movus is an electrical autonomous cargo vehicle carrying any cargo inside the airport apron
area between the Baggage Handling System and the airplane with enhanced safety, hygiene and luggage
protection measures which passengers may face after handling their luggages to the airport facilities.
Utilizing smart sensoring systems and artificial intelligence features, Movus autonomously facilitates cargo loading /
unloading, transfer and delivery functions without any human labour.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Smart Routing System includes two Lidar Sensors on the top to sense depth and distance. Two Stereo Cameras positioned on front faces improve the short-distance image processing to avoid obstacles. If any additional capacity is needed, a new Movus joins to the operation by V2V protocol immediately. Movus has 3-level compartment with adjustable door structure on both sides. Door is operated by linear actuators and positioned to each level to transfer the luggages. Modular conveyor system inside is composed of triangular modules with 3 omni-wheels positioned 120 degree from each other.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2021 and finished in February 2022 in Turkey
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Movus is an autonomous electric vehicle so the manufacturing is based on a metal chassis and thermoformed plastic parts to cover inside trims and vehicle body. The conveyors inside the vehicle are made of stainless steel and have modular units to provide any kind of customised layout.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1800 mm x Depth 3200 mm x Height 2400 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was mostly conducted with interviews and feedbacks on the experts on the areas of electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles as well as those responsible for airport cargo areas.
CHALLENGE: The biggest research challenge is the technological knowledge required for such a comprehensive project. Deciding on radar and camera positions, electric motors, batteries, loading/unloading structure, conveyor system... etc were all deciding factors and greatly affected the overall design form of the vehicle. It was an important part of the project to include all and look stylish and futuristic meanwhile.
Another research area was the current procedure and applications in airport apron area. Airport aprons are extremely strict and designated area and conformity to these standards was another challenge while developing the product.
