DESIGN NAME: Era
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting - Floorlamp
INSPIRATION: Timeless design means innovation in the broadest sense. Question everything. Search for new materials and processing methods. But also question the aesthetics. Looking for unique technical solutions instead of the most beautiful RAL color. How can an object be stable and elegant at the same time? Is a heavy foot necessary? How can different materials be best connected?
At Dasein, they add a pinch of environmental awareness to that.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Dasein is a relatively young brand, but with a lot of baggage. They have a hand in the scenography of various exhibitions from Keith Haring over Rinus Van de Velde to William Kentridge. And from Bozar and Kanal in Brussels to the Louvre. A past that gave the opportunity to work with talented artists and designers. And also offered the opportunity to constantly explore new materials.
Dasein is therefore not a carpenter who only makes wooden furniture, or a lamp maker with a background in the aluminum industry. Dasein is anything goes with an unstoppable hunger to explore.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Era is a floor lamp that can serve optimally as a reading lamp. Next to a relaxing chair for reading or knitting and next to a desk to draw up the next design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea was born in March 2022 in our studio in Ronse/Belgium. It took approximately 2 weeks from basic design to final implementation.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Natural, renewable and recycled materials always have the upper hand at Dasein. For Era this is Ayous (a fast-growing type of wood) and a granulate of recycled cork and rubber. Ayous has the properties that it has no knots, weighs little and is easy to work with. In addition to its beautiful looks, the granulate also has a good thermal property.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With lighting you usually get an electricity cable that needs to be integrated as elegantly as possible one way or another. It was decided not to hide it, but to use it in the aesthetic aspect.
The cable disappears through a hole to the back but returns with a little jump to the front. This way it is nicely guided downwards and the visually long-looking wooden leg gets 'broken' and upgrades it.
CHALLENGE: The biggest knot to untangle in this design was undoubtedly the foot. The traditional large or heavy foot was out of the question. A light-looking support in metal? The solution was found in the animal kingdom with the birds.
