| DESIGN NAME: Casulo PRIMARY FUNCTION: Display Cabinet INSPIRATION: Casulo display cabinet was created in order to be both functional and decorative, it was inspired in part by the nature that surrounds us between the Atlantic rainforest and ocean giving rise to its organic form though without relinquishing the minimalist aesthetic which we invariably adhere to. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Casulo display cabinet has both a contemporary and organic feel. The shelves and drawer are embraced by elegant slats gently rising and falling as they surround and enclose the area within giving Casulo a sculptural presence and making it as much of a showpiece as any item displayed on its shelves. The composition of the curves and dispersed slats give rise to a slender, delicate and airy feel in contrast to its otherwise imposing presence. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Casulo is a display cabinet that occupies a space between sculpture and item of furniture. Escaping from the closed and square format of traditional shelving units without sacrificing functionality with its three ample shelves and single drawer for the storage and display of decorative items. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Casulo was handmade from solid hardwood using traditional woodworking methods. The wood in this case was reforested African Mahogany donated by ABPMA (Brazilian Association of African Mahogany Producers), in order to raise the profile of this sustainable and alternative hardwood within the timber market. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 800mm x 420mm x 1400mm TAGS: Knót artesanal, display cabinet, solid wood, shelving unit, handmade RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main area of research was in regard to organic forms. Trying to draw on something 'real' in nature as opposed to an arbitrary shape. CAD modelling programs were used to imitate approximated forms of natural phenomena which were then simplified into 'clean' shapes. The resulting format is a hollowed out version of three wave forms around the rear and folding over the top. From the impression this gave arose the name Casulo, or 'Cocoon'. CHALLENGE: The most difficult aspect of this design was to maintain the equilibrium between the organic and minimal aesthetics. NAME: Knót artesanal PROFILE: Knót was formed between Brazilian architect Renata Gutierrez (nó) and Scottish woodworker James Rowland (knot), both passionate about the beauty, tones and textures of wood. Inspired by natural forms and the simple things in life, knót believes in the importance of fine details, in the return to working with your hands and in taking pleasure in what you do. Their intention is to create simple contemporary designs using only pure materials and natural finishes. |
