DESIGN NAME: The Power of Pastry
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Jewellery Kit
INSPIRATION: The inspirations are making processes and structures of different pastries. Designer was encouraged by homemade pastry, which is an interactive home activity to increase mutual happiness. Designer created a collection of interactive paper jewellery kits, which invite audiences to participate in the jewellery making process with design. And, according to the fact that most pastries are made directly by a piece of flat flour dough, that audiences do not need any glue during the whole making process.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Here is a collection of interactive paper jewellery kits, which invite audiences to participate in the jewellery making process following the recorded guide video. These special jewellery were simplified so that audiences can fold them directly from a prepared paper piece without needing any glue during the whole making process. The colour of this those jewellery is blank because designer wants to leave some space for audiences to design their different styles.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Designer believes that jewellery should not be limited by precious materials. Finding a way to communicate with audience is also a way to represnt jewellery. The interactive paper jewellery kits invite audiences to participate in the jewellery making process following the recorded guide video. The kits have different levels from simple paper rings to complex paper brooches. Auidences can try to challenge themselves step to step to feel the magic change from a flat paper to a 3D paper jewellery without glue. It will be a silent but amazing communication between designer and audience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This research began from making different pastrys, such as Chinese bao, pie, croissant and so on. This project was encouraged by homemade pastry, which is an interactive home activity to increase mutual happiness. Designer believed that this ineractive mode can be applied on jewellery design as well that interactive activity between designer and audience. The main material was paper according to the fact that most pastries are made directly by a piece of flat flour dough, these paper pieces of jewellery were simplified so that audiences can fold one paper jewellery directly from a prepared paper piece without needing any glue during the whole making process. Designer drew the digital sketch in software AI inspired by pastrys' structures, them laser cut and engrave paper. Testing and collectiong feedback from others to simplify and improve structures. This kind of design can be used as a sample pack for buyers to try and understand the structure of jewellery before they buy the finished metal work. And even it can replace the normal ticket to increace the value of normal paper ticket. And it is also a sustainable design which can be made by recycle paper. This kind of design encorage designers to give up some traditional concepts and materials to avoid over excavation in some specific materials such as precious stones and metals.
CHALLENGE: The most challenged thing during the whole design process is the paper's thickness. The thickness of 3 kits are slightly different, because they all have different structures. For example, the paper bracelet kit has more complex sturcturs, so it should be made in thinner paper. The ring kit needs more strong support, so it will be made in the thicker paper. In order to find out the most suitable thickness for different kit, the folding step needs to be tested again and again. It was the challenge of patient.
