DESIGN NAME: Easynav Infinity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Surgical System
INSPIRATION: While working in the field of medical technology, customer satisfaction and the comfort of the patient is very important. Aesthetical beauty with a seamless product experience is an integral factor that helps achieve it. The previous model of the product had inherent quality and accuracy but lacked the visual factors to appeal and compete in the market. Hailing from a family of doctors, the empathy towards doctors and patients became a strong motive to re-design the product system.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design ensures visual reflection of the quality of the product using unique form language while also being optimized for manufacturing and cost. It challenges the assumption that good curves and unique form language can only be achieved using processes like thermoforming, die casting, and so on. Infinity sets itself apart in the market with a unique form factor achieved using only sheet metal, a few bending, welding, and finishing processes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First, the product is assembled, sanitized, and made ready for the users to interact with. Then surgical data of the patient is added to generate a three dimensional model of the scans. Infinity allows for preoperative planning, enabling the surgeon to view the data and plan the course of surgery before making an incision. The system is then calibrated in relation to the body of the patient, to give accurate real time data for navigating toward the desired area with safety and ease.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2020 and has undergone three iterations and testing before reaching this final version in Feb 2022

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Infinity has Nerves of Steel, the product is made of sheet metal, Stainless Steel - to avoid any rusting, and has been optimized such that the manufacturing takes less time, and resources. The unique taper shape, curves along the body and the handle are achieved using modifications done to the bending tools and development techniques without any plastic components. Laser cutting, lancing, and bending operations are done following which welding, buffing, and powder coating is required.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions are product dimensions excluding the height of the camera and monitor
Dimensions: 457.2mm x 245.5mm x 927.2 mm
Material : Stainless Steel, 2 mm in thickness
Processes used: Laser cutting, Sheet metal Bending, Lancing, Welding, Buffing and Powder coating
TAGS: Futuristic, Medical device, User friendly, Robotic, Elegant, Soothing
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Qualitative Research was used to uncover areas of improvement in customer interaction, product safety, design language, overall experience, manufacturability, cost, and assembly of the product. After feedbacks and interviews with surgeons, OT staff, Team at HRS and experts from the domain, Investigator Triangulation had been used to validate the data points. Implementation of these insights into the design resulted in a Positive Change in the Perception of Product Quality hence Brand Positioning.
CHALLENGE: Most of the market in the surgical navigation segment has aesthetic forms that are manufactured using a combination of thermoformed plastics and sheet metal parts. Competing within the same segment while providing cost-effective solutions with unique design, premium experience, and without using plastics had been a challenge. The Interface had been created using a software with limited creative implementation capabilities so the design had to be optimized for fewer efforts and more impact.
