PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting System
INSPIRATION: The Capsule Lighting system is built to be extremely adaptable. Understanding how light behaves when refracted via various materials was the project's beginning point. When a light source is passed through the correct materials, it can produce a variety of visual effects, ranging from focused spot light to diffused ambient light. Capsule utilizes this phenomenon and applies it to modern user needs while minimizing parts and production complexity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Capsule lighting system is a series of modular lighting solutions for the home. Capsule is designed to be a flexible and an easily re-configurable lighting tool that can cater to variety of use cases such as productivity, entertainment and ambience. It uses a one of a kind pressure fit attachment feature that enables the main lighting module to create unique archetypes when combined with different base modules.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The capsule lighting module is a handheld flashlight that can be operated by simply interacting with the rotating ring on one of the ends. The rotation corresponds to varying degree of brightness. To use the Capsule module with the mounts simply align the positive terminal with the attachment feature and press it into position. The USB connection aids in keeping the battery charged and ready for use.
To change the different lighting diffusers, the user can rotate to unlock it and replace with a different diffusing module. The grooves on the capsule module and the diffuser help the diffusers stay locked in place.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2021 and after multiple prototypes and refinements, it was completed in January 2022. All development was done in San Francisco Bay Area.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Capsule lighting module is designed to be made out of Aluminum using CNC Milling process to ensure precision and light weight.
The Base stands use variety of processes from metal pipe bending to stamping and milling. Additional parts like rubber feet, attachment parts, cables will be made out of plastic, silicone and rubber using injection molding process.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Capsule Lighting Module : Designed to be handheld and comes in a cylindrical package of 88mm x 24mm.
There are two mounts that can be used with the lighting module.
Desktop Base - 130 mm wide and 330 mm tall
Ceiling Mount - 65mm wide and 110 mm tall
When used together the configurations are designed to look sleek and modern, without too much visual bulk to them.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After researching the flashlight and lamp markets, I discovered that many devices employ identical LEDs with variable degrees of power and, a reflector or diffuser. Capsule leverages the same LEDs across many configurations to provide a coherent approach that is more efficient since it requires fewer parts and allows for multifunctional use cases. After discussing my concept with possible consumers and manufacturers, I was encouraged to come up with a simple attachment method that didn't require any additional tools or complicated geometry.
CHALLENGE: One of the most difficult aspects of the project was coming up with a form factor that was both simple to comprehend and versatile enough to be used with various mounts. To keep things simple, a simple cylindrical form was selected, and the mounts were tailored around it to give a distinctive but minimalist personality to the configurations. Another hurdle was to design an attachment mechanism that was simple to use and ensured a tight fit. After numerous attempts, a simple pressure fit mechanism was developed to produce an elegant and straightforward method of product assembly.
