DESIGN NAME: Calibre
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Breath Metabolic Tracker
INSPIRATION: Calibre was inspired by a belief that access to meaningful, reliable data can improve everyday health and performance. Breath measurement is the most accurate way to measure metabolic activity, yet these tools were only available in labs and hospitals. Calibre is a wearable, real-time fitness metabolic tracker that measures breath flow and caloric burn of carbohydrates vs. fats, and oxygen uptake and other respiratory parameters. The data influences how daily routines and exercise affect the body and respiratory system.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Functional, aesthetically pleasing, and lightweight. Calibre packs a suite of gas and pressure sensors into a tiny, portable, wireless electronics module that clips to a comfortable face piece. Users can go anywhere and do anything, tracking dozens of real-time metabolic & respiratory biometrics, measured up to 50X per second. Activity agnostic with 14 hours of battery life, it features a tracking app to collect real-time data on airflow composition, to monitor daily activity effects on the body.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Calibre is designed with no restrictions in breathing or talking no matter the activity. It is comfortable, functional, aesthetic, and lightweight, featuring adjustable Velcro tabs and the right pressure for a comfortable fit and an air seal around the nose and mouth for accurate breath measurement. A precise tracking app and multiple gas sensors measure the composition and breath flow with remarkable accuracy. The data lets the user know how their daily activity routine affects their body.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Initial project concept design and marketing research began early 2020 at Ottawa based Design 1st kicking off with R&D testing, detailed design, prototypes testing, and parts specification that spanned to mid-2021. Calibre is expected to launch in mass market in the Summer 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: An adjustable head strap and hypoallergenic silicone gasket for a gentle secure rest below the nose. The mask is made of polycarbonate outer housings with a clear Tritan plastic anti fog facepiece, and an over-molded LSR silicone gasket. The head strap was designed with spandex, polyurethane foam, and an acrylic pile with adjustable strap hardware. A custom flex CCA was developed with pressure, CO2, O2, humidity, and temp sensors to measure breath flow and composition to determine real-time metabolics and respiration.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Calibre is wireless and approximately 50g in weight and includes 10mm wide elastic clear silicon head straps with OTS cord locks or 133mm stretchable fabric strap with snap adjustable headband. Modular constructed from antibacterial polymer and comprises rechargeable lithium polymer battery pack 3.7V, LED indicators, gas sensors, Bluetooth radio and microprocessor. A clear Tritan and Silicone headpiece with Hydrophilic Anti fog and measures 100MM X 85MM X 60MM.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Fluid dynamics, new sensor technologies, physiological research and testing to create hardware, circuits and firmware system in ultralight form factor for accurate measurement of respiratory flow & composition, Human anthropometrics analysis of facial structures and 3D prototype and user testing for face fit and breathing comfort. Automated testbeds with mannequin heads, pumps and calibrated gas inputs for measurement accuracy. Solving for variability between nasal and oral breathing, and as dynamic range between rest vs exercise, and managing condensation.
CHALLENGE: Packaging multiple sensing elements into a comfortable and functionable wearable metabolic tracking device, giving users access to real time data to monitor metabolics and performance improvements. This insight was previously only available at medical or lab facilities. Another challenge was developing custom testing and verification equipment and methods required to calibrate accurate data metrics. Sensor characterizations were refined in development process to validate product performance for repeatable and accurate functions.
