| DESIGN NAME: Pandanus PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry Set INSPIRATION: I like to wear earrings but my ears do not tolerate any weight on them. So I wear only tiny and nondescript earrings. One evening we had a Japanese desert which was wrapped in a pandanus leaf. I had to unwrap the box to find out how it was made. I realized that this was an option to make pretty earrings without being heavy. Imagine the delicious smell in my workstation! UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pandanus Leafs are (amongst other things) used to weave little boxes to serve a sweet rice desert. Building a container in this way makes it extremely lightweight. This is an advantage if you want to make earrings. The earring can be quite voluminous without being heavy. So Pandanus-Set is the transfer of the leaf-weaving into metal. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This set is fine and elegant, and the earrings can be worn even by sensitive people. The set shown on display is just one option to combine the boxes with other design elements as gemstones, pearls or diamonds. Because the boxes are square they can be combined with any round or square shape - and of course with all colors you can imagine. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Pandanus was woven, soldered, build and set in winter 2022. From first attempts with the pandanus leaf and silver bends to the finished set it took about 3 weeks. Located was the project in Langen near Frankfurt. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The set contains 2 earrings and one pendant. All is made of sterling silver and the stones that were set are mandarin garnets. The chain is made by facetted mandarin garnet as well. First I had to recreate the shape of the leaf that was used to weave the box. Then I tried to "weave" the silver like the leaf was woven. To secure it, I soldered it into place. And to finish the design I combined the woven boxes wit little square settings for the mandarin garnets. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Earrings: app. 25mm Pendant: app.40mm TAGS: Earring, pendant, mandarin garnet, garnet, pandanus, leaf, weaving RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I'm not the only one with sensitive ears, so this was kind of an overall incentive to find attractive solutions for beautiful earrings. And as a creative person I can see all things I'm surrounded by in a precious metal version. It was good luck that the boxes came as a dessert to my eyes. I wanted to take the boxes to my workstation at once. CHALLENGE: The pandanus leaf has a vein in the middle of the leaf. This is the position where the leaf should be bent. My silver leaf has no vein, so the appearance of the pandanus leaf box differs slightly to the silver box. But it was not my intention to copy the leaf box exactly, instead I wanted to create a lightweight earring. And the proportions to comply were important. So the earrings are of smaller boxes than the pendant-box, it took some trial and error to find the right scale for the 'silver leaf' for the bigger box.
