DESIGN NAME: The Glimmer
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Taped Train
INSPIRATION: Tape that is in love with Kaohsiung after exploring the city, such as the sea, ports, and mountains, so they decide to put the beloved city on the train. You may observe rainbows in both the sky and the sea after rain, sparkling bays, scattered buildings, intricate traffic lines, and lighting patterns in the expression of well-developed high-end technology.
For the interior, the interlaced arteries and veins represent the complex transportation of the train system in the city.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As an extension of the "Tape art by tape that 2.0" exhibition, while commemorating one of the biggest annual events in Kaohsiung, Taiwan - The Taiwan Lantern Festival, TAPE THAT uses glow tapes, which absorb sunlight in the daytime and glow at night, and luminous foils, and turns a train into a moving lantern, the first train lights up without any electrical power in the world. The story of Kaohsiung is transformed into a series of murals on the train.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By transforming urban imagery, TAPE THAT transforms light-storing materials into its own creations, which bring out the essence of glimmering light flowing in the city. It's as if people can enter the train and become a part of the glimmering light. They gather and enter the train, then get off and disperse, like a creative medium, absorbing light in bright places and releasing it elsewhere.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Between 2022/1/28 and 3/31, a train named "The glimmer of the train." runs in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Self-glowing tapes, luminous tapes, and luminous foils.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The 11-year accumulation of tape that is reflected in the glimmer of the train by applying multiple creative tape art techniques called "clash of styles". Nearly 110 square meters of tape covered the outside of the train. The interior was decorated with luminous foils and changing lights.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: An emerging art form, tape art has its origins in experimental street art. As it is movable and temporary, it can be used on any surface it is glued to, so it can blend easily into urban environments. Due to the wide variety of tapes, there are also many ways to create art with them. Without the aid of other tools, tape is the easiest way to draw straight lines.
CHALLENGE: From the very beginning, we struggled to find the right light-emitting tape with just the right glue. In nearly half a year of testing, we identified the best performing material based on the light, shade, and time calculation and placed the tape outdoors to experience wind, rain, and sun, and based on the glue stability, degumming, and residual glue condition selected the appropriate glue mixing ratio.
