DESIGN NAME: Plato and Aristotle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bedside Tables
INSPIRATION: The inspiration, as you can easily guess from the name of the project, comes from the famous fresco "The School of Athens", where Plato and Aristotle are represented together. While the first raises his finger upward to indicate the path to reach the good, the second extends his right arm keeping it suspended in mid-air to indicate the opposite process to achieve the same goal.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Plato and Aristotle is the project of a pair of bedside tables, which, although similar and combined, are very different from each other.
Plato, the left bedside table, has an upward development: a rectangular ring embraces it, supports it and slims it. In the lower part there are two drawers, in the upper one three small shelves to place books, objects or other. The trays widens via a square-shaped groove, placed in the lower side of the drawer, in this way it becomes invisible and the design remains linear and clean.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The two bedside tables are designed to furnish the entire bed wall, the vertical development of Plato allows it to be used not only as a bedside table, but also as a small bookcase. In fact, his three shelves can contain various books or decorative objects, such as vases, frames or other.
As for Aristotle, on the other hand, its development takes place downwards, this allows it to host a single shelf, which extends to the right, here you can store various objects such as the book you are reading, put down the telephone or other.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea and the development of the project takes place in Rome, it is conceived in February reflects 2021, modified and several times, up to the final design that gave the idea and the goal of creating 2 bedside tables that were combined with each other, but of different development, in May 2021. In the following months and days it was studied how to structure them and the first prototypes were made.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The supporting structure of the bedside tables is in metal and can be made in different finishes: brass, corten, chrome or gold. The tops and drawers are made of wood, which can also be customized with different finishes or types of coloring. For practical reasons, the bedside tables may also be available in the mirror version of the one visible in the images, namely Plato on the right and Aristotle on the left.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Plato is high: 1800 wide: 600 and deep: 300.
Aristotle, on the other hand, is tall: 60 wide: 850 and deep: 300.
TAGS: bedroom, bedside tables, nightstand, platone and aristotle, bedside table, bedside bookcase, different twins, heterozygous siblings, drawers and tops
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The study of the project begins, as can be understood from the name of the work, from two opposing philosophical concepts, that of Plato and that of Aristotle, the solution was then sought to apply these two concepts to two simples, maintaining their ease of use , and technical feasibility. The key that allowed philosophy and design to be linked together is the metal ring that surrounds the two bedside tables. The study on this element took place in examining various forms, and materials to make it.
CHALLENGE: The apparently easy challenge was to create two bedside tables that were combined with each other, as used together, but that had opposite developments. The difficulty was overcoming the mental barriers that have accustomed us to seeing bedside tables as 2 absolutely identical and mirror-like objects. During the design phases it was easy to fall into this habit.
