DESIGN NAME: Compact Pro
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Air Purifier
INSPIRATION: People in developing regions are facing issues of low income and air pollution. So designers wanted to create a low cost product with high performance for them. By using computational fluid dynamics, We try to use a systematic method to analyze and optimize the shape of the fan runner, the internal structure, and the overall proportion of the product. Finally, under the condition of controlling the cost, the performance of the product has been significantly improved from the previous generation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: After systematic optimization, we resculpted the shape of the fan runner in Compact Pro and determined that a square proportion would be better. This improves the performance by 50% while making better use of space and arranges the electronics more compactly. In design, the floating table-shaped interaction area with breathing light creates the visual center. The various parts are integrated by a high-order surfaces transition surrounded. The minimalist, neutral style conveys an inclusive ethos.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After power on, click on the center of the panel to start working. The purifier has three air speeds and four time settings. The red, yellow and green colors of the breathing light are displayed in conjunction with the digital display to show the current air quality. Compact Pro also supports locking and filter replacement instructions. The internal filter can be replaced by removing the front case by holding the grip position.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2021 in Beijing and finished in June 2021 in ShenZhen, China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After research, We found that some characteristics of the fan such as the spiral opening, worm tongue size, etc. have a strong correlation with performance. But size, proportion, cost, design, etc. will also be affected. Therefore how to determine a balance among these changes is a systemic problem. And to solve this problem requires us to use a systematic approach to organically sort, combine, organize, and analyze all the influencing factors.
CHALLENGE: Design team had to maximize the performance and design possibilities within the constraints as cost, aesthetics, etc. This process involves large amounts of combinatorial experimentation. To achieve a better balance also requires us to make various trade-offs. At the same time, to deliver a product like this requires design team to consider the problem from a variety of perspectives such as market, user, function, structure, aesthetics, craftsmanship and so on, which is also a huge challenge.
