DESIGN NAME: Cadeira
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: I have been collecting fine Brazilian woods and fine woods from all over the world in the past 35 years. I always liked to mix different woods, colors and textures, in my projects. At a certain point I realized that, in general, people are not familiar with wooden names. That was my starting point to design a chair made of 34 wooden species and engrave their common and scientific names on each part of it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is more than a chair, it is also a collection of samples of 34 wooden species; it's a chair one can learn about the diversity of this natural resource.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It's a confortable chair that same people just sit down and some people read the names and start a conversation about wood. It's very common also to see people recognizing a wood of a piece of furniture of their childhood; a wood that they didn't know its name, fond memories.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2020 in Sao Paulo and ended also in Sao Paulo in October 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The chair is made in my woodworking shop, Alvaro Wolmer Movelaria Fina Ltda, by two fine woodworkers. They joined the shop 30 and 25 years ago. We use the basic machines to work with wood, plus a CNC router to engrave the woods' names. Each chair takes 140 hours of work to be completed.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Chair: 82 cm high x 60 cm wide x 60 cm deep. Plywood Crate: 85 cm high x 64 cm wide x 64 cm deep

CHALLENGE: It is a very basic chair regarding the shape, and a very basic woodworking construction for a chair. The main purpose was to show the fine woods in their best and identify them.
