| DESIGN NAME: Bend PRIMARY FUNCTION: Flower Vase INSPIRATION: When I saw a single flower swaying, I wondered if I could bring the same view into the room. I design puts natural plants in the center and creates maximum space for presenting the beauty of plants. I thought that depending on the direction of view, the vase would lose its presence and the flower would become the main attraction, while from another direction, the vase would decorate the space like an art piece. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a vase that stands on its own by bending different lengths of stainless steel. The bent mirrored stainless steel reflects the surrounding scenery, and the thinness of 0.3mm makes the flowers sway as if blown by the wind. By bending different lengths of stainless steel, the height of the vase is randomized to look like a natural flower. This vase looks like a flower blooming in a garden brought directly into the room. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Insert the bent stainless steel plate into the slit in the acrylic. Insert a test tube into the hole in the freestanding stainless steel and fill it with water to make a vase. This vase is suitable for one flower for each test tube. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 in Japan and finished in June 2018 in Tokyo. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A strip of mirrored stainless steel of different lengths is drilled and bent, and inserted into the slit acrylic to make it stand on its own. A test tube is inserted into the hole to complete the vase. In order to make the flower the star of the show, I paid a lot of attention to the design of a delicate and light vase instead of a traditional heavy vase without excessive decoration. The swaying vase brings nature into the room and enriches our lives. CHALLENGE: The difficult part of this project was balancing everything: researching the thickness of the stainless steel so that it would be just thick enough to stand on its own in order to express delicacy, thinning the form at the base to reproduce the swaying of the flower, and adjusting the length of the stainless steel so that it would look like a single flower blooming at a random height in the garden.
