DESIGN NAME: Zhiliantai Industrial Park
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Urban Renewal
INSPIRATION: The shape of the tower is inspired by traditional Chinese windmill. The name of the site is “Bagua windmill” which is the symbol of “flow & balance”. The project uses a streamlined design language to interpret the ancient oriental philosophy. Another factor affecting the design is the four-direction views, including mountains, ocean, city and park. The four corners of the tower extending just like a windmill, this allows the tower to better enjoy the city from the sky.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Project is located in the center of Shenzhen's urban basin, with abundant natural resources. The inspiration comes from the ancient oriental philosophy: gathering energy and blending all together. Mountains, water, and air, meet like ribbons on the site, spiraling upwards. The "upward" form echoes the excellent view of the four directions from the air, with the plan of transform from square to windmill shape. The elegant and smooth streamlined volume implies concept of "flow and balance", while the gradient changing plan ingeniously solves the different program requirements.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2021 in Shenzhen and is estimated to complete construction in 2025.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: According to the requirements of different functions for the view, the project vertically arranges dormitories, offices and retails from top to bottom. The gradient windmill-shape-plan can solve the conflict and fusion of the three functions in the vertical layout, so that the functions can equally benefit from the plan.
Taking into account the sunlight requirements of the surrounding buildings, congenital corner-absence of windmill volume not only will ensure the comfort of the surrounding buildings, but also to create a sleek and handsome overall image of the tower.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There are two very important elements for residential design, depth and width. A shallower depth can allow sunlight to penetrate into each room, and a larger lighting surface can also make each room enjoy the best view and sunlight as possible. The windmill-like tower plan allows each unit more faces to enjoy sunlight.
For office, the square plane is better to use, and the space utilization efficiency will be higher.
Office and residence appear in one tower, such a gradual windmill volume can meet the needs of residence and office at the same time.
CHALLENGE: In a crowded urban space, a 250m-high tower will seriously block the sunlight of the surrounding buildings. The narrow site makes it especially difficult to move the position of the tower to reduce the impact of sunlight on the surrounding buildings. How to optimize the volume of the building so that more sunlight can shine on other buildings is the difficulty of the design.
