DESIGN NAME: Towards Nature Towards You
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition
INSPIRATION: This project is an 199m2 art exhibition space, located in Panyu district of Guangzhou, China. Panyu district has played an important role in shaping and cultivating the Lingnan culture, whose unique tradition and local arts have shaped generations of local Chinese. However in recent years, there has been a loss of this traditional culture, and a lack of art exhibitions in the community. Therefore, by utilising contemporary art in this project, the designers strive to reignite the younger generations’ love towards local culture and their surrounding nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The innovative aspect of the design of this project is that it is a ‘living’ interior design, as it divided the designers’ experience into separate pictures, which were then assembled into a physical structure within the art space. As the snapshots were transformed into plain architectural forms, this combination allows fun interactions between the architecture and people. Furthermore, the building arches are built in different sizes, accommodating individuals of differing ages and genders, so that each individual will have distinctive visual and sensual perceptions. The stage and arches can be utilised to display different exhibits, or can be used as seating areas. The designers hope that visitors are able to feel and engage within the space, and subsequently become a part of the arts.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designers collaborated with a contractor, who is a local art graduate and is familiar with design and the local culture. Through discussions about the use of materials and structures, this project was successfully completed within a limited budget.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 1 November 2021 and finished in January 2022 in Guangzhou, China

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Inspired by the culture of Panyu, the designers developed this art space, which was built in a local arts centre that was founded by the president of a local cultural creative industry association. Our main design concept of this project is to convey our own exploration experience in Panyu into architectural form and structure. Due to size constraints of the venue, the design of the art space focused on three main elements: open space, minimalism and unique building materials. Most of the building materials used in this project are sustainable and full of local characteristics, such as old red bricks, cement, wood, etc.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: XLXN Lifestyle Art Space is located in Panyu district of Guangzhou city. This town is known to be one of the origins of the Lingnan culture. We’ve read a lot of articles about Lingnan culture and Panyu city, and we have talked to people who live nearby our site. We took photos and videos, and recording the sound in the old city. In the process of documenting, we get to know more about people’s real lives in the city, and how they look at the city in their perspective.
