| DESIGN NAME: Fun Stories of Fun Friends PRIMARY FUNCTION: Textbook INSPIRATION: Making textbooks easier and more entertaining was the first approach of this project leading to a lot of thoughts and consideration. The design was planned in order to visualize and express the stories that are related to people's daily life with the contents to be learned. Cute 3D characters were created for this visualization and this added more entertainment factors to the book which is two dimensional. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: MiraeN elementary school mathematics and social studies textbook covers express the images of daily situation of people's lives as in connection with the subject. Characters are illustrated to tell the stories of learning contents in a fun way so that students can have an easier approach to textbooks which may be a bit dry at times. The fun characters that match the eye level stimulate the students’ curiosity and they make students empathize with the characters to increase intimacy with the textbooks. Continual communication with a growing child is possible through this. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 3 design keywords character, story, and color were used to communicate with students on the covers of elementary level textbooks. Each keyword’s role is as follows. Familiar characters were created to materialize and realize the study contents that could be boring by maximizing the characteristics of each subject and using them to depict the real situation in life with proper space and visualization. Stories never stop with unique and charming 3D characters adding small ideas and designs related to the study contents that are fun and interesting altogether. Different colors were used for different subjects based on the learning time, characteristics, and characters used for each subject. The effect of colors was maximized by using solid color for backgrounds and special effect for the titles. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project stared in January 2021 in Seoul and finished in August 2021 in Seoul, and will be released in March 2022 to students from all over the country of Korea. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Special effect, silk epoxy, solid PANTONE color, etc. were used along with 3D graphics of characters to give the cover a 3 dimensional look and feel. This had to be something that students would be interested in and motivating to them to actively engage in their academics, and to establish such a goal, it must have been something that could be seen as cute, friendly, and modern. Finally, friendly animals with cushy feelings were characterized and used as graphic components. The design was completed by adding real life stories that are related to the learning contents. Research on application of the color code was also conducted in completing the project. CHALLENGE: In order to give students expectation and curiosity on the learning contents in the textbooks, a lot of thoughts were put in what the design could do. It was also important to think about what kind of graphics should be used to communicate as a bridge between students and teachers. Colors for different grades and subjects were studied and carefully planned. Finally, many printed samples for the cover were worked on to enhance the over all quality of the books.
