DESIGN NAME: Dress
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pottery Furniture Collection
INSPIRATION: Aichi Prefecture is the traditional center of pottery production in Japan. Having lived in Aichi Prefecture for many years, I decided to use, lightness, and beauty of the pottery as my own way of expressing furniture. Furniture made from pottery has a problem in terms of strength and tends to be heavy. I decided to create a collection that was stronger while preserving the lightness of the material.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Dress is an interior design collection and installation, in which hanging cloth is expressed in porcelain as a "momentary space" that defies the earth's gravity.
By using pottery as a material for interior decoration, the quality of delicateness can be brought into daily life. To provide the installation strength, sheets of cloth are first soaked in clay and then baked it in layers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This work can be developed as interior decoration such as tables, chairs, and lighting. The organic natural shape is an accent to your life.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began research and production in May 2019.
It was exhibited at the exhibition held at Nagoya University of the Arts in February 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This work is a pottery made by dipping glass cloth in slurry and baking it in layers. The firing temperature is 1150 degrees and it is baked for one day. At that time, the shape is maintained by reinforcing it with sand or the like.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: It has been developed as various interior decoration such as chairs, tables and lighting fixtures, and the sizes are as follows.[chair]W450,D450,H960,SH350

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In this work, experiments were conducted to further expand the usage of porcelain materials.
For firing, an electric kiln that allows the temperature to be set according to time was used.
As a result of the experiment, a visually attractive pottery with spatial performance output was completed. In addition, because it has a unique light-transmitting property, it has become an eye-catching lighting fixture.
CHALLENGE: The cloth used as a mold was required to be water-absorbent, quick-drying, and heat-resistant. Cotton and nylon could not absorb the slurry evenly, and it took a long time dry. The strength when baked was also low.
We solved that problem with glass cloth made of glass fiber. It has water absorption and quick-drying properties, and by applying heat, it was possible to give the pottery even more strength.
