| DESIGN NAME: Arms PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Longue Chair INSPIRATION: The Arms outdoor lounge chair gains inspiration from the feeling of peace and relaxation. The design was conceived and sketched while overlooking a couple resting on the beach. The angled back legs relate to a human form reminiscent of a person sitting on the ground leaning back with their weight on their arms. The mood at the beach is energetic yet relaxed and social and the form of the Arms Lounger reflects those characteristics. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Arms lounge chair is a short lounge chair with bent legs designed for comfort and social interactions with others. The shorter length compared to straight legged lounge chairs allows it to fit in tighter spaces more comfortably. The use of powder coated aluminum and teak provide ample protection to the elements in an outdoor environment. Slots in the sheet metal frame allow captured water to drain and add ventilation for drying. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Teak slats are inset to the aluminum frame to create a nested look. The four teak slats are removable for easy cleaning and maintenance. An optional cushion with outdoor fabric can be added to increase comfort. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The frame is fabricated in sheet aluminum and powder coated with various color options. The teak slats fit interior to the frame and can be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance. With teak finishes in natural or weathered and multiple color options for the frame, the Arms lounge chair provides flexibility to fit any outdoor environment. An optional fabric cushion provides added comfort and flexibility to create looks to match any environment. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 700 mm wide x 1450 mm deep x 800 mm tall TAGS: modern teak outdoor chaise lounge chair RESEARCH ABSTRACT: An ergonomic model was created that allows for adjustment of length and angle of the seat, leg, back and lumbar. Adjusting the angles and length of the components allowed for the geometry to be tested by various users for maximum comfort. CHALLENGE: Wood expands and swells when used in an outdoor setting where sheet aluminum is fairly consistent. The leg attachment to the frame was engineered to account for the teak swelling. A post is welded to the frame that runs in a hole in the center of the leg. The leg is secured with epoxy from the center so that it can swell within the aluminum frame.
