DESIGN NAME: Clipt
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application
INSPIRATION: Connecting devices together is always harder than it should be, especially when you’re working across ecosystems. Ever emailed yourself a photo or had to type out a long address on your phone by hand, no more with Clipt!
We saw this first hand during a research session for an unrelated project. We needed participants to transfer something from their photo to laptop. One person messaged themselves on social media, another used a cloud platform to transfer and another emailed themselves… We thought there had to be a better way. As we looked deeper into the problem we saw that brands we’re great at catering for themselves but we believe you shouldn’t be punished for not sticking to an ecosystem so we were inspired to create Clipt - the easy way to transfer text, images, or files between any of your devices.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Clipt creates a link between all of your devices to increase productivity. Seamlessly and safely transfer text, photos, videos, and files by synchronizing your clipboard between your phone & laptop. Best of all is that it is very secure and completely private as Clipt is based on your own Google Drive.

Best of all is that it is very secure and completely private as Clipt is based on your own Google Drive.
Clipt stands out from the competition as it works completely in the background, once installed you will hardly have to open the app. Connect as many devices as you want and send without limits.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: For text, simply press copy on your laptop and a second later paste on your phone. One-time passcodes, long addresses, or complex passwords, Clipt makes it easy. For images and files simply upload to Clipt on any device and it will be available on all of your other connected devices. Unlike others, Clipt does not down-res any images, sending in high quality with no limit on file size. Snap a picture on your phone, send, and instantly paste in a presentation on your laptop. As simple as that!
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2021 and finished in May 2021. Our team is based across the world with the design team based in New York, a product manager based in London and developers across India, Taipei and China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The beauty of Clipt is how it works seamlessly and safely, completely in the background. By connecting to the Google Drive API, data transferred is uploaded to the user's cloud without being seen by Clipt. Google Drive will then return an anonymized file identifier, Clipt sends this identifier to all other connected devices telling them to access the cloud and download the file. In a matter of seconds, all your devices have the data available, transferred through your encrypted cloud storage.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Clipt uses Google Drive to transfer the users data, but in order to connect all the users devices together we use a combination of AWS and Django. Traditionally we are used to developing apps in Kotlin, the language used to create Android apps, however, to truly make Clipt work we quickly released we need to cater for all devices, mobiles, tablets, Macs and PC’s. From writing our browser extension in Javascript to developing the iOS application in Flutter, we faced many challenges along the way.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our initial research to identify the pain point we wanted to solve was based around small focus groups of users in our target market. However, we quickly realised that quantitative research rather than opinion based qualitative would be most appropriate for the ongoing project. We implemented a large number of data points inside our BETA applications and studied how users interacted, this data led approach allowed us to make decisions based on real usage rather than opinion or feeling.
CHALLENGE: In our research we watched users send data between their own devices in 10s of different ways. Using cables, messaging apps, email, social media, the cloud, and everything in-between. The hardest part of this project was creating a tool which was truly universal, from sending a small snippet of text to a multi-gigabit file. We knew if we restricted the user in any way then it would be so easy to go back to their old ways. After 100s of prototypes we’re confident we’ve made something great.
