DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Carlyle

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bench

INSPIRATION:
George Nakashima has been an inspiration in Timothy's design development. Nakashima was able to harness the power of the tree by utilizing the live edge style, connecting the user more intimately with the wood than dimensional lumber while creating truly unique pieces. Timothy has utilized this aspect of design while building his own style, incorporating contrasting geometric elements to create an organic modernism.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Carlyle bench features a single Claro Walnut slab that creates the seat as well as one of the legs of the bench. The other side of the bench is stabilized by a steel leg and brass stretcher. The unique combination of geometric shapes with organic curves of the live edge wood creates a balance of man made and natural angles, inviting the user to sit while providing a stable functionality.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This piece is intended to provide a minimalist seating option with a sturdy frame. By using geometric supports, the leg of this bench can be a simple and unobtrusive design while providing the support needed for a bench.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2021 and finished in October 2021 in San Francisco.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This piece was made by waterfalling a single slab of Claro Walnut, joined together with Festool's Domino joiner. The piece also contains a powder coated steel leg that slots into the wooden leg of the bench with hand cut chiseled joinery. The brass stretcher on the bench leg was laser cut from steel plate and plated in brass. The stretcher slots onto the square tubing metal leg and attaches with no screws or additional pieces needed.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
1250 mm x 450 mm x 470 mm

TAGS:
walnut, claro walnut, brass, bronze, bench, live edge, Nakashima

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This piece aimed to balance natural and man made angles by combining live edge wood and steel tubing. By introducing a 90 degree angle in the wood and a soft curve in the metal, the design continues to complement its' soft and hard angles, creating a unique piece that ties in multiple aspects of design and engineering.

CHALLENGE:
One of the challenges with this piece is getting the stretcher to fit on the metal leg with no additional hardware or welding. It slots onto the leg and provides stability because of very precise metal cutting and engineering.

PROFILE:
Timothy Hardman prioritizes the materials that go into his designs. Each design is centered around the best way to showcase the raw materials that go into the process. Instead of designing backwards and manipulating materials into forms that disguise their true nature, Timothy wants the user to feel connected to the piece and understand its origins.
