DESIGN NAME: Joyful Visang
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Textbooks
INSPIRATION: Traditionally, effective designs were aimed at universality that would not interfere with studying. However, modern students, who are daily exposed to diverse media and designs, find the old textbooks banal and uninspiring, failing to be interested or curious about the subjects. In order to remedy the problems of dull designs in the existing textbooks, Visang conducted experiments in cooperation with research institutes and directed the results towards changing textbook design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Visang developed play and activity-oriented elementary school textbooks that encourage active student participation. Learning content was developed to demonstrate its applicability to students. The mathematics text cover combines several geometric shapes to express the appearance of objects in the world. The social studies text evokes curiosity by 'looking into the world' as it unfolds in the book. The science text stimulates the power of imagination with stories of heroes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Visang proposes an educational perspective aimed toward engaging learning. The cover design includes content from the course, enabling students to have engaging discussions and activities about what students will learn. Not only are the cover designs connected to learning content, but also employ dynamic and vibrantly colored illustrations that spark student interest. Additionally, the main text is designed to maximize the learning effect by considering the natural movement of the readers’ eyes.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Antibacterial coating and the rounded corners of the book for the safety of students. Visang added function and aesthetics through post-processing techniques. The math text uses a foldable flap that serves as a bookmark. For social studies, a perforated portion can be removed, leaving a space to write the students’ own names for identification. Lastly, science textbooks employ 3D lenticular technology, giving a moving, three-dimensional effect to the subject, piquing students’ curiosity.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Visang textbooks are designed to be play and activity-centered, based on experiences that allow children to digest the contents of the textbook. After passing the 2021 accreditation for elementary textbooks, it was confirmed that the math, social studies, and science textbooks can kindle curiosity in students.
CHALLENGE: Digital natives are daily exposed to various media and colorful designs and have recognized traditional textbook designs as dull and boring. To remedy this, Visang transformed textbook designs in tandem with research institutes and through a variety of design experiments. In addition, following changes in the educational environment and student perspectives, Visang designed their textbooks to fully cultivate student subject competencies through remote classes or self-regulated learning.
