DESIGN NAME: Science is O2
PRIMARY FUNCTION: School Textbooks
INSPIRATION: QR codes are currently the most common digital application and are used actively in various fields. They allow for quick authentication and access to information. Consumers can easily and quickly access textbook information through the QR code implemented as part of the cover design. Promotional videos linked to the QR codes likewise convey the traits and uses of the textbooks to consumers.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: O2 is a science textbook that has used its established brand identity to imprint a confident and consistent brand image on its consumers. With rising need for no-contact education, O2 has digitized their brand identity, beginning with an easily scannable QR code on the cover. The code is designed as a key, opening useful textbook promotions and information. In this way, digitalization leads a constant effort to change brand identity to surpass the limits presented by books.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Consumers can access textbook information and promotions and experience engaging science videos simply by scanning the QR code on the cover. In addition to the cover, QR codes can be scanned for each main element in the textbook to access video experiment data or additional questions. Through diverse video material and information, students can learn and experience science more easily than with just traditional textbooks.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Launched in Korea in September 2021
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: O2’s brand identity of bringing to life the joy of science is embedded in the design, the matte coating of the background and epoxy of the main motif and graphics providing a vivid, semi-3D effect. For the elementary textbooks, curiosity and fun are engaged through glossy finishes that interest students in science learning from first sight. In addition, the corners were rounded for safer learning.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Elementary school textbook 220 x 300
Middle school, high school, advanced textbooks 210 x 297.
Textbooks are classified by grade and semester and undergo reorganization each year to maintain brand identity.
Elementary textbooks contain 8 volumes for each grade and semester, middle school textbooks include 6 volumes, and high school has 1 integrated volume and 4 in-depth volumes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: COVID-19 has rapidly changed the education, leading to an increase in remote classrooms and demand for digital content. As such, O2 has redeveloped its brand image to adapt with the digital environment.
Research conducted among 1,000 digital resource consumers revealed that they most require “textbook information and various learning materials.”
To surpass traditional limitations, O2 has strengthened its brand image so that consumers can better access books and also videos and digital materials.
CHALLENGE: Deep thought was applied to how to adapt a brand identity limited to paper textbooks to one exemplifying “digital.” Concerns centered on the use and experience of needing to access digital materials and textbook information only through CDs or homepages. By combining key-shaped QR codes with O2’s signature form, consumers can intuitively recognize the curious combination of brand and digital.
