DESIGN NAME: Solar Cladding
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Building Integrated Solar Technology
INSPIRATION: I can tell you the moment I was inspired. It was summer, and I was leaning against the wall of a high-rise that we were supplying material to. I could feel the heat and how warm the building was—it was 65 degrees on the building, but the temperature was 29. I began to think of the energy that was wasted. Why are we just warming the planet if we can capture this energy, and convert it into electricity? So we developed Solar Cladding so that every surface touched by the sun generates energy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Solar Cladding uses monocrystalline solar cells sandwiched between a customizable glass facing layer and an aluminum honeycomb backing. This technology establishes its uniqueness by replacing traditional building materials with an energy-generating, aesthetic alternative. Solar Cladding is an advancement over typical solar as it fully integrates into the façade with no design limits, including colour and size, allowing the construction industry to transition towards a zero-emission future.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Mitrex Solar Cladding is better than typical solar because it maintains the original function of the surface it is integrated into by acting as an energy-efficient building envelope. The surface layer is engineered to allow light to pass through and reach the solar layer through an embedded custom coating, which features fade-resistant colours. The glass also has an anti-reflective coating that maximizes efficiency and anti-soiling coating that allows for self-cleaning.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In only a short time, we finalized various projects and grew our sales pipeline to about 90 projects within NA. These projects are typically high-rise-mid-rise buildings, greenhouses, and warehouses that aim to include solar cladding. To establish this, Mitrex began with a pilot project at the manufacturing facility in Toronto, Canada in 2021. The building incorporates BIPV cladding that supplies energy directly to the facility, offsetting the reliance on the high-carbon grid.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mitrex Solar Cladding uses encapsulated monocrystalline solar cells with a customizable colour-coated tempered glass exterior. The glass is stronger than regular glass and stone and is mounted onto a composite aluminum honeycomb base. This design takes advantage of the honeycomb matrix to increase the integrity of the façade. A variety of attachment systems for different needs make installation simple. Further, our automated manufacturing plant allows for rapid and consistent production.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Our Solar Cladding does not have standard lengths, widths, and heights due to us providing fully customizable dimensions for our solar products. Unlike traditional solar technology, Mitrex can produce solar modules in a variety of sizes to meet the design demands of architects.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research objective when developing Solar Cladding was to integrate solar panels into building materials. The methodology used was investigating relevant solar/building codes and standards. Internal testing/validation was conducted, and prototypes were sent to 3rd party labs for certification (solar, structural, and fire testing). The effect of this research is technology that creates a new generation of multi-purpose materials that shape how we design buildings to achieve net-zero emissions.
CHALLENGE: Building-integrated photovoltaics are not new technology. However, being able to use this technology without being limited by shape, sizing, texture and colouring is new. Through Hadizadeh’s research and development initiative, Mitrex was able to overcome these obstacles. Now, Mitrex integrated solar technology is able to easily distribute customizable material from a limitless pattern and colour range as well as the rare chance to contribute to a carbon neutral future to our clientele.
