DESIGN NAME: Rizhao Bailuwan Cherry Blossom Town
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art and Cultural Space
INSPIRATION: “I desire to feel something that the inherent tensions drives and comes from the original site.” In the current market, placing the same design system on different sites without distinction is not a rare move. We reject such crude copying, and strive to intervene in the site with a “take root” mentality. This means we take the situation of the site in the first place, to think of the materials that we have before taking actions in design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The client proposed to bring a natural but artistic atmosphere to the site. The project respects the original natural mountain atmosphere and the essence of the orchard. It features three elements: The design of a pure cherry orchard, elevated in the sky. A base of emerging curved textured walls made from local granite boulders form a strong image and blur the boundary of vertical wall and horizontal path. Winding roads covered in cherry blossom petals complete the impression of the forest valley.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In the spirit of “take root” in the site, the strategy of landscape and earth is adopted. Taking a continue epidermis method to blurry the boundary, in an uncommon dimension, it breathes and grows together with the earth.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2019 and completed the construction of the entrance and park in 2020 in Rizhao, Qingdao.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Rubble, is a witness to the era of the change of site. We use the rough stone which is originally from the site and process it into stone veneer. Local craftsmen use traditional techniques and modern expressions to take the locality. People and nature are guarding this place in the same way.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total Area: 97,000 square meters, Entrance Area: 15,000 square meters
TAGS: natural mountain atmosphere, cherry grove, local rubble, life container
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: What is the relationship between the landscape and the land? From our point of view, they should be like "a nail pierced into the earth", as whole, not individual parts.
There is no subjective and arbitrary speculation, but to follow the clues provided by the site and continue to inherit the spirit of the site in a brand-new form.
CHALLENGE: Big steep, bare rock, yellow land......We soothed the abused mountain and paid our respects.
The site is inherently spiritual, and only by means of "rooting" can it not be destroyed and the original spirit of the site can be retained to the greatest extent.
