DESIGN NAME: Cups Kamakura
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cafe and Hotel
INSPIRATION: Cups Kamakura is a cafe restaurant, which also has the hotel function, located in front of a beach. The building has have more than 50 years history, and in the design works it was necessary to consider its special background influenced by the regionality and environmental aspects.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Because the property is facing to the ocean, Kamio tried to expand the inspirations from water linked images. He made several graphics concerning to water and transformed the inspired images to attempt into cafe & hotel spaces by carefully dealing with color balance, sunlight reflection, and material selection.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Because the building was already 50 years old, Kamio needed to work carefully on preservation and reproduction works. They proceeded demolition step by step, and decided the design details on each time depending on the area condition.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2020 and finished in July 2020 in Kamakura Japan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Kamio vailed off the all ceiling panels and showed the existing historical structures. He painted the wooden structures with clear glossy lacquer while adding steal supporting structures.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In building studies, the team took off the most of exterior and interior panels and checked the existing conditions. Also, in market studies, they researched the over 100 neighbor hotels and restaurants and tried to figure out the tendency of price, design, and atmosphere.
CHALLENGE: One of the hardest parts in the design activity was structural preservation work. It was necessary to add new supporting structure to keep the enough building strength beside showing the original beautiful structure frames. It was very important to carefully match the old and new structure characteristics such as shape, color, and material in the space design balance.
