DESIGN NAME: Tandem
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Video Game Console Controller
INSPIRATION: There are lots of benefits to playing video games. However, to get those benefits, people are usually required to be skilled or experienced in using controllers. This requirement will make it difficult for ordinary people or casual gamers to get access to playing video games smoothly. As an avid gamer playing with friends or relatives, the uneven skills can cause changeless and predictable game results, damaging the atmosphere. By simplifying and providing new controls, Tandem is able to solve it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tandem is a set of two split-up game controllers that can team up two people to play as one to help foster interactive, meaningful bonds and create shared memories between people of different controlling skill levels or even different generations.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Tandem has the potential to make any kind of video game couch-cooperative. This project is not just about the hardware, one person playing video games with one controller alone, but the interaction and communication between people. Playmates are the most playful point while playing video games with Tandem.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2020 in New York and finished in April 2021 in New York. It is a thesis project for the Master of Industrial design program at Pratt Institute.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The body will be manufactured by injection molding. The material is mainly PCR(post-consumer recycled) ABS. To achieve the functions, Tandem will use motion-sensing and gyroscope technology to detect the motion that users do while playing video games.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each handle is going to be 120mm x 40 mm x 120 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project researches the history of console controllers to understand the context of the controller’s development and compares different kinds of game controllers to define the hidden problems of controllers. With the analysis of thorough interviews and questionnaires, the final objective distills and combines the features from different user interfaces to provide a possibility for the game controller industry and break through the deadlock.
CHALLENGE: Finding a few proper kinds of video games to let Tandem engage and conduct the feasibility test is the difficult part.
