RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With an interest in sustainable construction, we wanted to redefine the lantern festival as an art installation but not a disposable piece of junk.
Drawing on traditional timber construction methods of mortise-and-tenon joints and snap-in hardware, the project is an attempt to create a disassembled installation that is both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing.
The research process requires an understanding of the properties of wood construction and raw wood materials, and the ability to create new applications within them.
CHALLENGE: It is difficult to analyse the structural mechanics of the various components, and we have used digital design tools to simulate and scale the prototypes to overcome the challenges of three-dimensional construction. We have also achieved excellent results with the help of our traditional staff who are well versed in the art of large wood construction.
