DESIGN NAME: Vocam
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vlog Camera
INSPIRATION: As we know, we have been in the era of We-Media. Many people want to share their life experiences with others through social media like YouTube. The existing product doesn't satisfy the customers. It has terrible usability and not ergonomic to hold the regular camera when users take a selfie or video shooting themselves. Suppose users want to shoot high-quality vlog videos. They have to buy many different types of equipment, such as an external microphone, camera handle, and video light.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vocam is a digital camera design for users who want to take vlog videos and demand high-quality photography and portability. It is a modular camera design that helps vloggers quickly switch the mode between videography and photography. Elevating video shooting performance and portability by the built-in professional microphone, control grip, and LED video light without carrying extra equipment. The design also brings users various color, material, and fabric options.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To switch the shooting mode from photo to video. First, pull to take out the control handle on the right side of the camera and then push the spring button on the control handle and sliding to connect the handle with the camera body. Dial the functional switch to popup the microphone, screen, and LED video light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2019 in Pasadena and finished in September 2019 in Pasadena

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For production it could use recyclable plastic or silicon for injection molding. The camera screen would use anti-glare LED display. The grip surface could have waterproof fabric or cloth.The control handle would use chargeable magnetic technology.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the world, over 150 million people are doing self-media, by 2025 it would increase 137 million people in self-media population, the market are still rapidly growing.The existing product doesn't satisfy the customers. It has terrible usability and not ergonomic to hold the regular camera when users take a selfie or video shooting themselves. Suppose users want to shoot high-quality vlog videos. They have to buy many different types of equipment, such as an external microphone, camera handle, and video light, to improve the performance and usability. The camera would lose portability after installing extra equipment.
First, I researched the existing products on market and then did user research to find out the pain points of using the current product. Pain points to help me develop the design insights. Based on the insights to do ideation sketch. Find out the possible design solution and build the 3D model. Made a prototype to test the size and basic function.
CHALLENGE: Designing a smart way to organize the different functional parts together. Help users quickly switch the mode between video shooting and photo shooting without installing extra equipment.
