DESIGN NAME: Nibbiorosso
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Electric MTB
INSPIRATION: A continued research project formed the basis of the design. The process had two parts, starting with
individual research that shifted towards brainstorming on CAD software. The concept developed after a
continued analysis of texts, articles, interviews with experts, and various personal experiences. In this
case, the design was to be as abstract and futuristic as possible, whilst also producing an alternative to
today’s products, as a means of pushing the future of the market.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Designed around modularity, the Nibbiorosso is an E-bike made for the mountains. Powered by a 2.8kw
72v electric battery with a max. torque of 160Nm, or via foot pedals, the bike can function on and off
road with 2 front gears and 11 in the rear. Its integrated circuitry means removing the battery can be
done with a simple double action, and the engine by removing the right pedal, for traditional bike use.
Additionally, its controller box is separate, making future battery installations easier.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: One uses the bike like any other E-bike. A twist of the handlebar propels the user via electric power. However, it can transform into a regular bike. Unscrew the right bolt on the right pedal arm to remove the circular disc that transforms power from the battery. Using a Key lock, with a simple double-action, one can also remove the battery pack. The bike's circuitry is integrated, and its dedicated controller box allows for quicker conversions to electric power when reapplying the battery.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Nibbiorosso project began in Montecatini Terme, and due to Covid 19 restrictions, work solely remained there. The designing and building process lasted around a year, starting from February of 2020. Work on the Nibbiorosso slowed down between March and June of 2020 due to urgent requirements for another project. This was soon after compensated with more intense research and design, following the interruption.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The E-bike research and design process stemmed from a desire to pioneer concepts within the market.
Though these kinds of E-bikes have existed for some time, I challenged myself to innovate technological
aspects for the sake of user friendliness and simplicity. There admittedly were some difficulties in
designing the rear part of the frame to fit the shock spring, with the intent of keeping components safe
and ensuring reliability. Overall, the goal of the design was to advance the E-bike and Mountain bike
markets, and present a provocative concept that could fit two desires into one practical yet modular
design.
CHALLENGE: For the Nibbiorosso, the rear frame suspension system proved to be the most challenging. Though some
parts had bigger challenges than others, the problems of the shock link were the most complex. Locating
a shock link with correct specifications for the design, whilst remaining affordable and reliable, was
imperative for the design to function.
