DESIGN NAME: Faster Than Light
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pendant and Earrings
INSPIRATION: This piece is dedicated to the ever increasing speed of everything going around that we witness, especially since the beginning in the 21st century. Faster inventions, faster computing clouds, social networks, shorter attention spans, everything gets faster and faster. As per Einstein, when objects approach the speed of light, they get smaller and heavier, and even the time itself slows down. Now imagine what happens beyond the speed of light...
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design visualizes the accelerating objects, structures and particles. The further the speed increases, the smaller the objects get, and the structures turns into chaos. Finally, at the speed of light, everything collapses into one single point. But beyond this point everything resets, and something completely new and unknown begins, getting into a new dimension.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You can wear the pendant on a chain as a necklace. A good fit is the chain type called "Gourmette", just like the one you can see on the pictures. The same design also exist as earrings. For evening gowns, one can use larger size pendant in the front, and a smaller size backdrop pendant, combined with earrings. You may choose the metal color to match your style, dress, or mood.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Faster than Light was first conceived in 2017, and first presented to public in 2018 on 10eme Salon Creations de Brabant Wallon, Belgium.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production involves manual design, 3D design and prototyping, high precision casting, laser and manual welding, as well as manual finishing. For sterling silver rhodium-plated and 24k gold vermeil versions, it also involves electroplating.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: There are two versions of the pendant, a regular one that is approximately 3,4x2,2cm in size, and large one that is around 5,4x3,2cm. The earrings are 3,4x2,2cm. The pieces are available in 6 types of metal, namely 18k and 14k white gold with palladium, 18k and 14k yellow gold, as well as rhodium-plated sterling silver and vermeil.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As part of the design preparation, I have double-checked my understanding of the theory with an engineer. When modeling the piece, the proportions of details have been calculated to create the impression of increasing speed, while ensuring the feasibility and practicality of production.
CHALLENGE: The design challenge was to express the speed and acceleration of objects into a still piece of jewelry. The production challenge was to reproduce all small details accurately.
