DESIGN NAME: Alishan Forest
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Aesthetic Event Proposals
INSPIRATION: Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, known for its ecosystem diversity, was founded in 2001. In the past decades, Alishan, in the face of increasing elderly tourists, was shrouded with an old-fashioned image. In the transformation process, Alisan faced the biggest challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in 2020. To respond to such a challenge, we proposed "The Aesthetic Proposal for Seasonal Forest," which brought artistic experiences to the Alishan forest in four seasons. Through serial activities in art, ecology and traveling, people explored the Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter Alishan forest in a brand-new way. In this project, Alishan underwent a tourism makeover, turned into an exit for people miserably latched in the post-pandemic period, and successfully attracted tourists at different ages.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To capsize people's archaic idea that Forest Recreation Area is only for "Forest Conservation and Healthy Hiking," The Aesthetic Proposal for Seasonal Forest led the local government out of the erstwhile manners in forest management. People now started to explore the forest with three new dimensions: "Respect – The Harmony of Human and Nature," "Aesthetics – The Balm of Art and Forest," and "Coexistence – The Reciprocity of Species and Forest."
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We tailor forest events based on seasons, terrains and cultures.
Spring, the violinist leads people along the cherry blossom trail with dulcet melodies.
Summer, with Bluetooth earphones, people watch a movie under the sacred trees without disturbing the night ecosystem.
Autumn, people attend a painting party in transparent houses. The colorful houses later become the pop-up installation art that blends into the forest.
Winter, in sunrise, people enjoy a forest picnic without creating pollution.
Four aesthetic forest events teach people the importance of coexistence by: 1. Knowledge for forest 2. Respect for forest 3. Relaxation with forest.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2020 and finished in December 2020 in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area.
"Spring, Floral Concerts between Cherry Blossoms" on March 10, 2020
"Summer, The Forest Cinema Under Sacred Trees" on August 8, 2020
"Autumn, The Painting Party in Maple Forest" on October 9, 2020
"Winter, The Sunrise Picnic on Grass" on November 14, 2020

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We designed four aesthetic events— "Spring, Floral Concerts between Cherry Blossoms," "Summer, The Forest Cinema Under Sacred Trees," "Autumn, The Painting Party in Maple Forest," and "Winter, The Sunrise Picnic on Grass," in response to four seasonal features of Alishan: flowers, sacred trees, maple and sunrise. Through serial aesthetic experiences in sound, vision, touch and feel, people immersed themselves in woods without forgetting the importance of coexistence with nature.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: On the premise of respect for nature, four aesthetic forest events were all built with either transparent, wooden or natural materials for people to interact with the environments in the closest way.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The forest not only can regulate weather, clear the air and hinder air pollution, but it also consists of ecosystem diversity and provides social and economic benefits. This proposal inspires people with deference for the forest through serial aesthetic events with forest knowledge. By word-of-mouth publicity, people initiate their balmy seasonal visits to Alishan. With different aesthetic cultures, regular seasonal trips and revisits, this proposal creates a benevolence cycle for the forest.
CHALLENGE: Alishan is known for its diverse sceneries, sunrise, cloud sea, sacred trees, railways, etc. However, it lacks annual quintessential events and marketing strategies. Ever since the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area was established, there was always the same activity every year. While Alishan was undergoing a tourism transformation, it encountered the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, how to subvert people's stereotypes for Alishan and create a brand-new traveling experience for people during the pandemic were two major challenges for our proposal.
