DESIGN NAME: Uniform Teeth
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dental Clear Aligner Packaging
INSPIRATION: Clear aligners are an alternative to braces and are designed to straighten teeth. The goal was to create a kit to delight on the journey to a new smile.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The packaging has 4-division structure to neatly display the sets of aligner bags and a convenient removable box added to store dental goodies like whitening gel. A pop-of-orange carrying case rounds out the packaging. Flexible silicone allows it to fit conveniently into a pants pocket and provides for easy cleaning and safe aligner storage. The packaging relies upon a sophisticated serif with refreshing color palette. The color contrast between exterior and interior is intended for an unexpectedness when unboxing.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After an in-person office visit, patients receive the aligner packaging kit that will accompany their treatment for up to 6 months. Throughout the treatment, patients wear the 24 stages of aligner in the order that is displayed in the box.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2020 and finished in December 2020 in San Francisco.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As the packaging accompanies patients' treatments for up to 6 months, the rigid magnetic closure box was used that is sturdy and durable for the kit exterior.
The aligner bag has a resealable zipper lock for conveniently storing the aligners.
Every component of packaging is collapsible and can be assembled to help save storage space for our manufacturing suppliers.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: From the user interviews, when patients take out the aligners for their meals, they often cover them with tissue paper or sometimes put them in their pocket. We understood the need for resealable ziplock bags instead of disposable ones.
CHALLENGE: The packaging kit contains 24 aligner bags (2 clear aligners per each bag), travel case and dental goodies (whitening gel, elastic bands..). The challenge was to organize the different size, shape and look of multiple items in a box. After multiple rounds of prototyping, we chose a 4-division structure to neatly display the sets of aligner bags and added a removable box that the travel case can be placed in and at the same time store dental goodies. This structure keeps the box size from not getting too big and also groups and organizes the contents.
