| DESIGN NAME: Beyond PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hand Mirror INSPIRATION: One time I got into a car, a wing mirror caught my eye. It helps the driver to see areas beyond the driver’s peripheral vision. I wondered what if a hand mirror also can reflect beyond our appearance. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a hand mirror inspired by a wing mirror. Like a phrase on the wing mirror 'Objects in mirror are closer than they appear', a phrase 'You are more than you appear' is marked on the surface of the mirror. It takes people to think about their own beauty inside beyond their appearance. With a generous volume shape on the back, it gives a gentle feeling when they are in hand. The mirror is placed slightly inside so it is protected by a wood rim when it is turned over. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The ash wood gives natural warmth and lightweight on hand with shock resisting density and hardness. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2020 and finished in January 2021 in Seoul. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It consists of two parts. The wood part is ashwood with a soap finish and the mirror part is an acrylic mirror with laser cutting and text marking. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 96 × 69 x 25 mm TAGS: Hand mirror, Mirror, Ash, Object, Design, Industrial Design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As this hand mirror is linked to the wing mirror of the car, I tried to find the most general characteristic of the wing mirror. Afterward, the shape was refined through the iteration of sketches and model making. CHALLENGE: It was challenging to create a simple and concise phrase transition from the original one while keeping its essence. It also took a long journey to find a satisfactory volume shape in both situations when gripped by hand and placed on the table. After all, those challenges allowed me to go further than I expected.
