DESIGN NAME: collectibles
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: We started with reducing the design as far as possible: the ring's shape is rounded in- and outside, it's straight and simple. We decided to set the diamonds in a random pattern, but this design was a little to plain - the amount of diamonds was to little compared to the massive ring. We decided to place a coloured gemstone in the centre and to arrange the diamonds in a pattern like stars in the sky. Our customers choice was an oval green sapphire as centre stone.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BrittasSchmiedeis specialised in upcycling. We create new jewelry from all the pieces our customers bring to us. Sometimes we use the gold, sometimes we use the precious stones from the old gold. The ring presented here is created from diamonds that became available when the customer sold all her old gold jewelry. Her wish was to have her old jewelry upcycled and transformed into a modern ring.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: BrittasSchmiede is specialist in creating jewelry with a connection to the past. A minimalistic ring that can be seen like a screen on which all jewels can be arranged like the customer wishes. It is a good base for a design. Quite often diamonds are 'left overs' when selling old gold. It's amazing how many designs are possible - depending on the size and quality of the diamonds and eventually the other gemstones that are left over as well.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Winter 2020-2021 in Brittas Schmiede in Langen/Hessen, Germany.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The ring is turned in its shape by CNC-turning machine. It's made from 750 rose gold. The diamonds were set out of their old settings, cleaned and - together with the green Sapphire - set.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Ring: Diameter app. 22 mm x 8 mm
750 rose gold
green Sapphir and various Diamonds
TAGS: Ring, diamonds, sapphire, collectibles, left overs, upcycling, recycling, memories
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We unset and cleaned all the diamonds provided by our customer. We found a fun way to help the customer visualise the new design: We made a drawing of the ring in scale 1:1. and then put the stones on the paper to try the different ways of setting the stones until we found the right position for each gemstone.
CHALLENGE: The challenge in this project is to find the balance between new and old. To create a new jewelry that can preserve all the good memories contained in the diamonds.
