DESIGN NAME: Dolores
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Credenza
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by the Name Dolores and the shape of a butterfly wings. When I hear this name I see this image. I always wanted to incorporate the shape of a butterflies wings into a piece of furniture but not be bulky, and have clean lines in a sleek modern way.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Mid- Century Inspired Credenza with Butterfly Legs. Instead of the standard box design, Dolores is a Trapezoid shape. Her shape would force the observers eyes toward the base. The designer is calling them butterfly legs. Instead of the legs being hidden and out of sight they appear to be carrying the piece. Mixed with heart and sap wood of maple, Dolores really stands out and creates conversation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Dolores can be used as a Credenza, Sideboard, Record Cabinet or even a Dresser.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Dolores was started December 20th in Mantua NJ and was Finished January 5th in Mantua NJ
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Dolores is made from Walnut Plywood, Hard Maple (both heart and sap wood) and brass hardware.
Creating a trapezoidal piece of furniture that is both form and function was a challenge. The base and the edge of the top both meet at the same plain so there is no tripping hazard or wasted space.
The butterfly legs create an extremely sturdy base for Dolores. I find that a lot of mid-century modern furniture is wobbly and at risk of tipping. Not Dolores she is very sturdy and has absolutely no wobble.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The type of research was very minimal. Once I have an idea I don't like to research it much because I don't want to be influenced by other's designs. I usually research after the project is complete to make sure it's completely original. When I did search I used google and looked at Mid-Century Modern credenzas with butterfly legs. I saw nothing even close to what I designed so I continued to production.
CHALLENGE: Creative Challenges. 1. Design a piece that follows the form I visualized yet offers optimal function. 2. Maintain stability while incorporating the leg design that inspired me. It must proportionally come together, work if you will. I have found balance issues in the past with many mid century modern and contemporary furniture pieces I have come across. All but the very best designs leave something to be desired. The angels needed to come together, they needed to be just right.
Challenges arose when deciding on whether to use solid wood or Ply wood. I wanted to strike a balance between cost, strength and durability. I see this piece as something that should be replicable down the line when built for the consumer.
