DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Shift Littleton

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Shared Workspace

INSPIRATION:
Clutch Design Studio was inspired by Littleton’s rich agricultural and railroad history, combined with the trendy and friendly vibe that now defines the area. The design weaves in elements from previous Shift locations such as borrowed timber and Edison bulbs, with site-specific found trinkets and artifacts. Walls of dramatic patterns and textures frame curated and custom artworks, creating a timeless design for these changing times.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
As Shift Workspaces’ third location, Shift Littleton establishes the growing brand as a hospitality-driven collaborative workspaces leader. Clutch Design Studio worked intensely with Shift Workspaces to anticipate the new demands of today’s remote workers and small businesses, with the eye-catching elements and the creature comforts to inspire and boost creativity and productivity. Shift’s mantra is unapologetically edgy yet luxurious and inviting.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Clutch Design Studio worked with Shift Workspaces to create a space inspired by the local lineage, delivering a hospitality-driven experience with services and amenities that allow for all aspects of life to be completed in more enjoyable and efficient ways, and that fostered a community whose impacts, professional and personal, were felt immediately and compounded for decades to come. We wanted to create a new generation of maximalist flexible office spaces that blend experience with enchantment.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Completed: July 2020 2679 W. Main Street Littleton, CO 80120

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Materials sourced for this project include Timorous Beasties wallcoverings, Brooklyn-based Flavor Paper and tailor-made wall coverings from local books of antiquity. The 3rd-floor lobby dazzles with different iterations of glass chandeliers sourced from Restoration Hardware yet is grounded with Tarkett’s wood flooring. Clutch worked with Shift to surround the latest technology for the virtual world of working with tangible objects to remind occupants of the real world outside this dynamic space.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
28,000-square-foot, arts-oriented space, 117 private offices, 17 private phone booths, 6 conference rooms, 3,000-square-foot outdoor terrace, 4,500-square-foot bar and lounge are with unobstructed mountain views, community kitchen, cocktail and coffee bar, massage and meditation rooms, state-of-the-art of air filtration and UV disinfectant systems to treat viruses, bacteria, airborne mold and pollution, lustrous finishes and details with elements that pay homage to the surrounding area’s past as an industrial and agricultural hub, robust color palette that pairs rich reds, shades of black and low lighting with saturated pops of orange, yellow and emerald green, dramatic materials and textures, including heavy wooden timbers, a mix of graphic wallpapers, soft leather furnishings and wool felt ceiling clouds, framed curated artwork from both local and international artists

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Clutch Design Studio worked with the Shift Littleton team, who we’re seeing a number of memberships from dual-income households. The facility was located amidst the agricultural lineage that still peppers the streets of downtown Littleton, Colo. We paid homage to this lineage with our design aesthetic through a thoughtfully crafted curation of materials, furniture and art, and broadened the net on the agricultural story. We sought to embrace the boutique hotel and members-only philosophies through individual experiences from the moment one steps in the lobby all the way to her office door. We were also interested in the idea of discovery and letting the space unfold and reveal itself the more one uses it. The library conference room features a full-size floor lamp in the shape of a horse, Oaxaca artist murals line the walls, and antique furniture pieces were given a new life and purpose within each room. While object and art curation is a primary focus, the team prioritized intentional spaces that allowed for what the client referred to as “intuitive hospitality.”

CHALLENGE:
With two existing urban locations in the Shift Workspace portfolio, Clutch Design Studio wanted to create an experience that drew anchoring and inspiration from its geography (Littleton has agricultural/equestrian and industrial lineage), held the Shift brand value of intuitive hospitality, while finally demanding more from a workspace for the current and future needs of its members, and the positive, compounded impacts longer term. These intentions were stated before adding the tactical design and space planning elements, which included challenges such as biophilic design, environmentally conscious materials, curated services and amenities, concierge space and offerings, community square footage, indoor/outdoor flow, state-of-the-art filtration systems, and an eye for design that honors local artists and collected objects.
