DESIGN NAME: The Circus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Earring
INSPIRATION: This earring is inspired by the performance of a circus. The earring is perfectly symmetrical, creating a balanced appearance. The hoop and the sphere that spin in different directions, represent the dynamic movement of acrobats. The vivid and eye-catching gemstone colors replicate the palette and vivid colors of a circus.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The ellipse frame dangling under the stud allows the inside parts of the piece to move freely, without any disturbance. The frame is angled with an emphasis on the center, while the hoop is slightly tapered on the top and the bottom to show a slight difference when it spins. When the sphere turns, each various colored stone is highlighted and shows several views.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The tube was soldered inside the hoop after the piece was cast with the wire attached to the sphere, allowing the sphere to spin. The wire on the hoop was soldered afterward and riveted on the ellipse frame.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was designed and completed in February 2021 in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research began first by observing and understanding the postures of circus acrobats and the tools they use. I then decided on the shape and the movement of the piece I wanted to create. I reviewed circus photographs, researched the color palette, and incorporated these vivid colors into the earring.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this piece was transforming my vision of a circus, which is active, balanced, and free, into a wearable and functional piece of jewelry. I wanted to incorporate the movement, allowing the piece to move in different directions, while at the same time making it functional and wearable.
