INSPIRATION: This beautiful heritage site is in danger of the urbanization, it would become an ugly mess and the seminary would be surrounded by a mediocre suburb, if no planning had been done. Inspired by The Cradle of Vietnamese script, by Lang Song printing house, the motor of this development is local and foreign tourism thanks to the beauty of the site, the bay, the lagoon, the mountains, thanks to the variety of heritage, thanks to the attention, passion of Binh Dinh people for culture and science...
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Pilgrimage is an urban design project to preserve, embellish Seminary as Cultural Heritage and promote its value to develop community based tourism. Beside preserving the precinct of the church and surrounding rice fields, the Master Plan proposes to connect the old church to the riverbank by a square for commercial, cultural activities. The Wells and Spring Of Letters are created as outdoor art and lighting exhibition on National script, poetry and music, where frequent events take place, community activities to attract tourism.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The CBT area which is also a pilgrimage site of Catholics attracts visitors thanks to the beauty of Seminary and surrounding rice fields, to the story about the cradle of National script narrated in the language of modern art and to the landscapes of bays, lagoons, mountains and the diversity of heritages in Binh Dinh.
The square and artist village is to inspire other artists to compose. Events and festivals allow visitors to experience and interact directly with the local community.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in 2018 in Binh Dinh, got the approval for 1 to 2000 Zoning Master plan in Jun 2018 and for 1 to 500 Detail Master plan in July 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A master plan proposed to protect the rice field around the Seminary from the spontaneous buildings and identify the areas to develop the tourism.
The concept of the Wells Of Letters and the Spring Of Letters created by lighting and reflective materials on the ground of the square aims to bring the story of the origin of National Vietnamese script out of the existing museum, to tell the story to the world, to the community, continue to create a new heritage value for the future.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The master plan of 71 ha is to preserve and to enhance the site of the Seminary as a living heritage, to protect and to enhance nearly 1 km the bank of the river. The urban design develops the land of 7,1 ha for commercial, cultural and touristic activities with a square of 4000 m2 lead to the river and the floating market, aims to relocate people living along the river and to offer new housing in better conditions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This urban design is to preserve the heritage of the Lang Song Seminary and promote its value to develop community based tourism. Urban heritage preservation and Sustainable economic development are important goals. Work started with historical documents and current situation studies, workshop with the participation of the bishop, residents, government. Asean CBT standard is mentioned with many activities related to the protecting heritage and environment, enriching valued cultural traditions.
CHALLENGE: A big challenge for developer and urban planners is to connect old - new culture, find an equal development direction between two different themes of space, time and to convince investors. Covid 19 changes the world, makes tourism to be very difficult to develop commercial, cultural activities, especially to make monument a living heritage to attract the tourists. Although, Community Based Tourism allows people share the benefit by small groups, very flexible to catch up the customers demand.
