DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: The Things
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stainless Steel Bowls
INSPIRATION: The design idea is from the philosophy of The Equality of Things by Zhuangzi who was the philosopher in the ancient Asia. Under ZEN, everything is the same, and people agree or deny other’s point of views are based on their own perspective subjectively. This inspires us to create the polygonal bowl set of 5 which are seen as 5 different bowls, but in fact the bowls are the same, just the open top is on the different planes. From a start to the end, it is the same thing, no matter of race & origin.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This set includes 5 bowls, each is designed as a polygon with unconventional shape as an art block and sculpture. Every piece of the set is polished with a crisp, mirror finish on the exterior.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This set of bowls can be used as tableware, home decors and also modern blocks for meditation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2020 in Hong Kong and finished in September 2020 in China.
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The creativity is totally beyond the production possibilities. Abnormal and polygonal design of bowl requires special metalworking techniques that the defective rate is high.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This set is made of stainless steel grade SUS316 (SS18/10), laser cutting and welding are used to form the block.
Dimension of each bowl: L141xW105xH116mm
Wall thickness: 1.0mm
Outer Surface: Mirror-polished
TAGS: stainlesssteel, bowl, polygonal,
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Exploring various metalworking production techniques were crucial to the success of the production of this project.
CHALLENGE: The creativity is totally beyond the production possibilities. Abnormal and polygonal design of bowls requires additional metalworking techniques that the defective rate is high.

I am absolutely mesmerized by this work! The Things is an incredible example of good design and a great representation of how a simple idea can be interpreted in a unique way. The philosophy of The Equality of Things by Zhuangzi is beautifully manifested in the polygonal bowl set of 5 which are seen as 5 different bowls, but in reality they are the same, just the open top is on the different planes. The exterior of every piece is polished with a crisp, mirror finish and the creativity that went into this project is truly commendable. The fact that the designer was able to bring their vision to life despite the production challenges is simply remarkable. Congratulations to the creator of this beautiful work on winning the A' Design Award!

I am absolutely captivated by this work! The idea of embracing the concept of equality through the design of a set of bowls is simply brilliant. The use of the polygonal shape to illustrate the same bowl on different planes emphasizes the message of equality that the designer is trying to convey. The stainless steel material also adds a unique touch to the overall design. I am truly impressed by the creativity and skill that has gone into this piece and am delighted to have been able to appreciate it. Congratulations to Irene Yeung for this amazing piece and for winning the A' Design Award!
