PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: There are three design inspirations. One is from the rattan weaving technique, which is the intangible cultural heritage of Guangdong, China; the second is from the meditation tradition of Eastern Buddhism; and the last is the Chinese tea drinking culture. This work combines the three. The shape of the design is based on Buddhist piers and traditional armchairs, and the traditional culture is fashionable through contemporary design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: First, the traditional environmentally friendly materials bamboo and rattan are used. The craftsmanship and materials are unique and can help local craftsmen to find jobs. Secondly, the work combines daily life with religious meditation culture and tea culture, and can spread regional culture through design; , The chair combines the functions of the chair and the table organically, and the proportions of the shape are beautiful, and the CMF experience is excellent.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This work combines the functions of a chair and a table. You can rest, meditate, drink tea and read a book at the same time. It has multiple functions and a good user experience. It is suitable for use in quiet indoor spaces such as clubs and homes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The work started in December 2019 and completed in June 2020 in Guangdong, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Using the unique rattan weaving technology in Southeast Asia, the workers specialize the raw materials of bamboo and rattan, and combine the bamboo and rattan with solid wood through bending and weaving techniques. The modified works redefine the value of this traditional material and handicraft through design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the design of this work is mainly to spread regional culture through contemporary design, combining rattan weaving skills, Buddhist culture and tea culture. During the design process, the traditional weaving crafts, existing products and contemporary lifestyles were investigated in detail. Combined with the investigation and design, the work was completed through modern design methods.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of this work is to deal with the relationship between design and craftsmanship. It needs to communicate with workers during design and production, especially the part where rattan and wood are combined.
