DESIGN NAME: Kanyon
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table Collection
INSPIRATION: Kanyon collection is inspired by the poetry and beauty of the topographic characteristics of canyons. The design translates the basic formal features of canyons to a minimal and unique design language, while aiming for a sculptural posture in order to transfer that awe-inspiring feeling of canyons as the sculptures of nature. Functionality is integral to its sculptural posture, where the U profiled gap between different table surfaces serves as a convenient and aesthetic space to store books & magazines.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Kanyon is an authentic coffee table series which combines functionality and sculptural posture with simplicity, beautiful materials and skilled craftsmanship. The inspiration coming from the topographic beauty of canyon structures is translated into a minimal and unique design language. Customization is provided in shapes (round and oval), veneers, colors & dimensions. Additionally table tops can be produced with different marble tops based on user's choice. As a result, Kanyon offers a unique expression that blends with different interiors while making its statement as an artful centerpiece.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Kanyon provides functionality, emotional experience and uniqueness through its minimal, sculptural form and strong visual effect. U profiled gap between different table surfaces serves as a convenient and aesthetic solution to store books & magazines and the 2-level tabletop design allows the user to arrange objects based on use, ease of access or aesthetic appeal. It can be customized according to user needs and desires by veneer & dimension alternatives as well as different marble top options. This makes Kanyon collection highly adjustable to the requirements of different spaces.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2020 and finished in August 2020 in Istanbul. The coffee table is provided for sales since October 2020 among Studio Kali's product collection.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Many sketches and cardboard models were made to optimize the overall dimensions, to decide on different heights of the table tops and the gap of the U-shaped storage area in order to make the furniture piece comfortable and easy to use and to give the desired visual effect. Later through an interaction with the local craftsmen, the details regarding table top and base joinery were decided using small scale prototypes.
CHALLENGE: The major challenge of the project was related to optimizing the production costs by making the right choice of materials while ensuring that the result still reflects the high-quality appeal and fine craftsmanship that was desired. Initially the coffee table was intended to be produced using only solid wood but this resulted in extremely high production costs compared to the brand’s price positioning. Therefore it was decided to combine solid wood with high-quality, thick, natural wood veneer over fiberboard panels.
