DESIGN NAME: Entangled
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Calendar Holder
INSPIRATION: The concept of this design was originated from the pressure of life. Works can drive people crazy every day. The tense is similar to the behavior of a spring that pulls with unlimited force on both ends. The pressure needs to be released so people can move on.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Entangled springs are used to represent the tense that may occur to our life. Four springs were used to represent spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The shinning chromed surface presents a contradictory appearance of rings that a calendar slip can be clamped. The time flow that entangles with working tense creates a hilarious metaphor. It becomes a ceremony that the base can be thrown out of window into the snow and dig it out next spring to start a new year.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Only this base was designed. This set is intended to be used and displayed. Interaction starts from setting up the calendar slips above or through the small seam of the springs. The arrangement can be smoothly made on a table as a way to simulate the pace of four seasons. It is very easy to clip and release each month in different angles. The interaction is made possible by winding month strip around fingers as the metaphor of entangled involvement of time.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started as early as 2020 in Taipei. Various diameters and lengths of spring were tested in several on-and-off preliminary tests without a particular function in mind. The specific set was finalized as how the parts were shaped and assembled in late 2020. The duration of last presentation was about one month.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each spring is about two cm in diameter and 80 cm long. Four springs were used. The final configuration was developed by applying a base entangled curve of the first spring to form a theme to start with. The curve was added and modified gradually by the second, the third, and the forth one. Each spring contributed to the shape and redefined the former topology just like what each design stage will affect following development of form and function.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimension of base is about width 15 cm x depth 10 cm x height 10 cm. The dimension of whole set is about width 40 cm x depth 21 cm x height 12 cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researches were made to the composition of different gaps, diameters, lengths, shapes, and materials of springs to create vocabularies. The flow with continuous connection to calendar slips was also studied to ensure a smooth dynamic order from each day to four seasons.
CHALLENGE: Using springs to create a form actually was not as easy as it looks. The springs were industrial products manufactured for heavy duty purpose. The first spring was rotated in a relatively easy process. The following three added difficulty in an exponential manner. The most challenging part was the significant tension occurred to the last one. Arranging highly tensed spring in an order to maintain the smoothness was also challenging too.
