DESIGN NAME: Colour Temperature Shanghai
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Small Apartment Design
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from when we draw sketches on Concept Note. After demolishing the old structure, the apartment becomes a Blank Paper, we design new wave patterns/geometric shapes/lines as basic structures to make it like Concept Note. This apartment uses some Memphis design elements to make it modernize and aesthetic. Color blocks and materials are used to divide functional areas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project combined the living and dining areas in the limited space, yet also used details in ceilings and the floor to separate these two different functional scenes. For example, on the floor, the design use wood and cement for such separation. The living room used a U shaped curtain rail. On regular days, these curtains can be placed behind the sofa as background. If the family and friends of householder come to visit and need to stay over, the curtains can open and turn the space into a guest room.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This case was a second-hand apartment, and we have retained the original basic apartment structure. We intentionally removed the door sill, elevated the ground, and left storage space to improve the space's functionality. To separate the room, we decided to use different colors for sectioning: kitchen and restroom are mainly cool tones of grey to give a sense of calm. In the Living room and bedroom, we use warm colors to add vitality to daily life. On the creativity front, we made a few artistic decorations to enhance the overall quality.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project worked during April to September in 2020 which is located in Shanghai Putuo District.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In this case, we use different colors to create both an energetic and relaxed mood while making space appear bigger. Because of the limited space and budget, we didn't use a rigid structure to divide the space. Instead, we use colors and materials for this technical function.
From living room to bedroom, a series of cabinets with multifunction is made of solid wood. Hard materials with vibrant colors and non-sharp corners give the apartment a soft touch of sense. A fireplace is embedded in the dining room cabinet, adding a peaceful atmosphere to the area. The Colors and design elements are perfectly integrated into the technical purpose.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The structure of the bedroom cabinet shape is L, and it is composed of two parts. The side near the door with two wardrobes and the bookshelf (display cabinet), the length is 1940 mm, width is 600 mm, and height is 2600 mm. The other side of the cabinet with a desk and a small wardrobe. The length is 1500 mm, the width is 500 mm, and the height is 2600 mm.
The dining room cabinet's length is 1400 mm, width is 450 mm, and height is 2700 mm.
The fireplace is embedded in the dining room cabinet, the length is 1400 mm, depth is 200 mm, and 400 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the overall design, we want to make the relationship between people and space unadulterated. In a busy metropolis, a home is where people can slow down and enjoy their lives. There is no over decoration, no accumulation of luxury goods, but filled with current and popular sustainability elements. The design begins with the owner's most essential needs, ends with the inclusivity of those who live here. On this basis, we simply want to add decoration, improve the quality of life rather than overconsumption.
CHALLENGE: Three elements challenge this design: limited space, multi-functional needs, and personalized aesthetic decoration. The useable space is only 54 sqm. We made multi-functional spatial arrangements within the limited space to meet customer needs and use geometric elements and wave patterns to decorate the rooms. We aim to have the client live comfortably and relax in such a fast-paced city like Shanghai.
