DESIGN NAME: Lakeside Lodge
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: This space was created as an extended image of the private villa. It is hoped that the natural atmosphere of the mountains, forests, sky and water can be injected into the house. Adhered to the eco-friendly concept, a large number of idle stock materials were upcycled and used together with the client's stone and the wood collection as part of the decor. Through interweaving colors and textures of different materials, it shows layers of characteristics and renders a modern Zen style.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To accommodate both residential and entertaining needs, an open kitchen was incorporated to create the teppanyaki area adjacent to the living room. This skillfully blurs the division between living and dining areas and facilitates easy flow. In the planning of the overall space, a geometric combination of long sofas, long tables and large cabinets was employed to extend the visual movement and enable flexible and harmonious functionality - allowing the host and guests to interact in the open space and enhancing visual and spacious experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design took into account the requirements of the configuration and future maintenance of the teppanyaki equipment, the exhaust pipes, exhaust motors and other equipment. This involved moving and re-arranging partition walls and old toilet piping. The teppanyaki exhaust pipes were also cleverly hidden and the main beam was decorated in the open-plan space. All were aimed to deliver a spacious, clean layout with a smooth flow.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in September 2020, located in Hsinchu Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Thanks to the material color and tactile quality, users can sit or lie on a carpet that mimics grass. The wood cabinets in the size of a tree and the emerald marble flooring correspond to the orange sofa which represents the fruits from trees. To mitigate the oppressive sense of the ceiling caused by the building structure and the kitchen equipment, as well as considering the client's nostalgia for the lakeside, the corridors were covered by mirrored metals to the ceiling.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Interior 75 square meters. The internal scenery of the reflective space is similar to the feeling of water reflection, which not only makes the natural color of the house more diffuse but also makes this space faintly reflected by the metal mirror material to achieve the effect of space enlargement and extension. Once entering the space, the user can feel a sense of release and calm belonging in the low-convergence spatial tone.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Different from the common approach of designing before material selection, this project utilized existing materials to tell a story about the space and borrowed the characteristics and nature of the materials, including the unused logs and the stock of unwanted marble in the manor. Using the material as the backdrop of the design, the design creates a central statement of the client's manor landscape with bright colors and bold texture.
CHALLENGE: When using old wood stock, the challenges include high wastage due to insect damages, cracks and tree tumors. Some logs were installed in TV stations, desktops, cabinets based on their special shapes and patterns to maximize usage. The ambient humidity level during production also affected the size and shape of the final product. These issues were successfully overcome - achieving a functional and beautiful design.
