| DESIGN NAME: Bcompact Hybrid PRIMARY FUNCTION: Compact Side Folding Stair INSPIRATION: Whilst living in NYC's high-priced & cramped conditions for many years, I realized the necessity to create products and furniture that make the most from your practical living space. Furniture that folds away or has multiple functions. Returning to study later in life to pursue a Product Design Degree, I realized an even greater need for sustainable products, ethical design practices & material use, which lead me to devote my practice to these aspects, sustainability & clever, compact design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The staircase gets a simple but brilliant upgrade with the Patent Pending, sideways folding, Bcompact Hybrid Stair with Bi-folding Handrail & integrated safety gate. This space-saving staircase neatly folds sideways to close flush or into the wall when not in use and is made from sustainably sourced, Bamboo, color stained to match your decor. Tailored to your exact specifications; making assembly & installation a breeze. ...After Time, SPACE, in the modern metropolis is our most precious commodity. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With minimal infrastructure alterations, you can quickly create new usable spaces in your home or work areas. Simply accessing new locations to broaden the opportunities to make new living & workspaces. Adding value to your home for the least cost and time whilst maximizing the area when not in use. Also creating an exceptional security device, denying access to top alternate floors. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: These initial products were launched to a worldwide market in 2019 and these latest versions and varieties are coming to market now. Designed in Sydney Australia and manufactured in here and the USA for worldwide distribution. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Zero waste CNC cutting techniques employed to create & cut all sustainably grown & sourced Bamboo plyboard stringers & treads. maximizing material usage of over 90% & then repurposing what little waste is created to make new variant products. Specially designed 180deg. built it hinges, enabling the product to fold flat & within its own maximum thickness of 40mm. Products utilize all non-ferrous metals, Brass, Aluminium & stainless steel to ensure a long & fully functional design life cycle. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: All products are specifically designed to exact specifications for each situation. with heights ranging from 1.2m-3.7m & angles between 50-70degs. Also including wide, 715mm & narrow 575mm versions. Other features include and fully automatic Bi-fold/compacting handrail and automatic opening & closing safety gate, ensuring space at the top landing is never left open when product is folded/stowed flat to the wall. Locks are available to keep in the open or closed positions, from the top and the bottom. The desire to achieve a compact space-saving device that serves this unique function whilst taking up virtually no space when not in use and incorporating sustainable materials and design techniques has been a labor of love and necessity. CHALLENGE: The original concept of creating a stair/ladder that was fully functional and operational that also took up virtually no space when not in use, was the most difficult part to think up an original innovation of a device that had basically been unchanged for thousands of years. Once achieved and evolved into final renditions, working out how the certification and standards for this never-before-seen functionality could be adapted and or changed to suit and therefore be used in commercial and industrial applications? Still an ongoing challenge that is needing solutions.
