DESIGN NAME: Patra Sparkling Swiftlet Series
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Packaging
INSPIRATION: The value of Patra is to help Hong Kong women to increase the self-esteem and shine by improving the appearance. Thus, Patra required the design to present the feeling of ‘dignified supreme.’ The functions of the product series are hydrating and whitening, with one of the main ingredients is bird’s nest. As the cooked bird’s nest appears as liquid transparent stalactite. Hence, the design theme is 'crystal rain', with the main inspiration chandelier, the grand and shiny decoration.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The outer packaging appears as metallic finish with the play on light reflection. Instead of flat gradient, numerous shaded stripes rise from bottom, which also make the pendant-patterns seem subtle, like parallax illusion. Short white stripes drop down over the logo to provide solid roof. On the outer package of mask, 2 layers of pendants in different varnishes, which lead the shining effect and different patterns visible at different angles. All the features create various layers of depth.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The products are designed with the consideration of online promotion, so the KOL can open the package without leaving sight off camera. The transparent and the shaded pendants layers on outer package of mask can lead audiences to see the shining effect, whilst the KOL is moving the box. Meanwhile, the interior of the package for serum is a trapezoid stand printed with the pendant patterns, which provides a stage for the bottle with field of depth to emphasise the exquisiteness of the product.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2019 in Hong Kong and finished in April 2020 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The outer package of mask is shouldered box structured with lift-off lid and the outer package of serum is book-style structured. To build up the depth on a flat surface under the manageable cost, only 3 colours are used and foil-stamped on the logo; numerous of single-coloured stripes rise from the bottom to enhance the illusion of depth. Particularly, one layer of pendants is varnished in transparent UV on the outer package of mask, which creates the subtle shiny feature.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main target audiences of Patra are professional Hong Kong women between 20-40 years old, who believed to be proactive and confident. They are usually single and freshly married. On the other hand, the packaging design trend at the online market in Hong Kong is either being colourful and eyes-catching or being plain and professional.
CHALLENGE: As the brand image tends to be elegant and professional, the client required the design able to present the feeling of luxury wellness with the sense of ‘dignified supreme.’ Thus, the challenge is to find the balance of being subtle and elegant that consist of the brand image, as well as being eyes-catching and attractive to match the online market and the target audience groups.
