DESIGN NAME: Vacant Rooms
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Short Movie
INSPIRATION: The main inspiration, which was selected by director, was Guillermo dell Toro, Pan's Labirynth. For me the most interesting thing in his work and in this movies was the fact how much dell Toro smuggles elements from the Spanish-speaking culture due to his origin. I've chosen similar way for the world in Vacant Room, but I wanted to import Polish People's Republic time because of it's standing out in polish culture.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: First we had storyboard for this project where we discussed with director and cinematographer whole action. Then we went to the location where, with the storyboard in hand, we searched for the exact places and discussed where exactly what scene would happen Later we searched the prop and costume stores, second hand shops, museums, friends and other places where we could find props, furniture, and costumes which would be suitable for this movie. Some of them have been patinated or remade for this production.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First inspirations with which director came to me was to follow Guillermo dell Toro movie "Pans Labirynth", which uses lots of motifs from Spanish culture. Then we moved on to the idea of smuggling Polish reality instead of Spanish motifs, since the film takes place in Poland. Then, at the research stage, I read a lot about the communist period in Poland and looked for photos, images that reflect this period. I have also read a lot about Guillermo dell Toro and his work process and inspiration.
CHALLENGE: I think the hardest part was to put everything together and make it work on this location which was small and we had little time to do so. All departments especially cinematography department and set design department and production had to cooperate with each other so that each element was matching. We had only one day to build and prepare all rooms for shooting. Then, during the shooting, we could work on details.
